M'kay... Fred just lent me a kick-arse CD (bloody kisses) by Type O Negative. I'd never heard of them before Fred corrupted my fragile little mind. I'd hate to go out and buy all their CD's only to find out they suck... So can anyone tell me what other worth-while albums they've produced?
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Jon can tell you, since he owns them. Talk to him next time you get a chance, but I can tell you the one you now have is probably their best work... And I only like mebbe 3 or 4 songs on it. Their other work is even more seriously F***ed up than Bloody Kisses. Listen at your own risk. ;>
By Vengence is Mine (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
Defenetly one of those bands that you have to get into. I have BK, plus the album October Rust and their newest one, somthing like When the world Falls Down? I saw them in concert once and Peter Steele the lead singer is defenetly one of those guys you want watching your back in a fight. He's like 6'5" and built like a mac truck.
OR is a good album and worth a listen. Some of their other albums are Origin of the Fececes, and Even Snow Dies (good luck finding that one though).
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
6'6" actually, and he posed for playgirl too. I ran across one of the pictures when I was searching for lyrics to BK. Yes, God is a woman.
*naughty*
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
So Damien, are they good live, or do they suck? I was just wondering.
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
I went out and got OR and I love it! My next purhcase will be "world falling down". I'm actually kinda pissed that I wasn't exposed to this group sooner, I missed ALL their tours!!! I feel so cheated!
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
Okay, I couldn't help myself as I passed by Tower Records on my way home. I now own every CD from type O-. Origin of the Feces is so damn funny, a new favorite of mine already. Takes me back to my goth days. Fred, I think you'd like it. my absolute fave off the album is "I know you're fu*king someone else", the only reason I like it more than the other songs is because I find it to be the most scarcastic/humorous.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
How many do they have?
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
A total of six I think; "The least worst of" is their compilation album (and most recent), but they do have a few new tracks on it. I also got to listen to "Hey Pete", which gives me the giggles.
I haven't gotten through all of the albums yet, so I brought them with me to work- and yes, I brought my headphones so as not to disturb the boss.
By Vengence is Mine (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
Were you able to get the elusive, "Even Snow Dies"?
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
Are you sure you don't mean the song "everything dies"? It's on their "World Falling Down" album. I went through their discography and there wasn't a mention of anything called "Even Snow Dies." Would you happen to know if it might be from when Peter was in Carnivore (before Type O-)?
The band also has an official website:
typeonegative.net
By Vengence is Mine (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
No, it's a TON album but upon thinking of it. I think it was one that you had inmport or something. I know It's them and that it exsists because a friend of mine had it.
By Bryan Cummings (Houdini) on Unrecorded Date: |
Here is blantent copy of a post someone else made in another web board about Napster:
"I've read alot about this over the last 12-18 months. Artists simply don't make that
much money from the sale of their CD's. 10% sounds about normal. The bulk of
their earnings come from touring & merchandising.
Also the electronic equipment, recording studios and most employees are shared
across the entire industry and do not need to be re-purchased for each new CD.
An old college fraternity brother of mine owns a plastics company in Chicago. He
makes CD jewel cases. He works very closely with other companies that make the
printed materials and the actual CDs. The RIAA members own none of this, they
out source all of it. The total purchased price of a complete CD, fully packaged and
shrink wrapped is less than 35 cents. This is the price that the packager charges
the record company!
With annual quantities of over 930 million, I refuse to believe that a 4300% mark-up
is required to cover artist profit, label expenses/profit, distribution expenses/profit
and retailing expenses/profit.
If the automobile industry used this rate a Dodge Neon would cost $250,000.
Let's put it another way, the sticker price on a basic Dodge Neon is roughly
$13,000. If you chose to buy music CDs instead of the car, you could only buy 815
CDs. Lets see:
A car with an internal combustion engine, anti-lock breaks, sophisticated
transmission, dozens of sensors and switches, air-bags, safety glass, seating for
5, 3 year warranty, all used to propel human beings safely at over 88 feet per
second.
OR
815 plastic coated aluminum platters that were purchased for a total of $285.25
I can't be the only one that sees a problem with this."
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
More or less, if you're a musician, you don't make very much money at all unless you make it big, and I mean BIG- like Madonna. Though I don't give a flying swive if the music industry suffers, I do feel bad for the artists who only get the left over scraps and they're the ones who feel the pinch.
I don't see what the music companies think they've accomplished other than getting little legal backing. What good is legal muscle when people by the hundreds of thousands (and growing) download music illegally? The music industry hasn't won a thing. They've made en example of Napster, so what?
Then again, lots of the mp3s available for download are of really poor quality (some idiots don't know how to rip a CD). Sometimes that makes it worth buying the CD.
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
Well, I've kind of tracked down the "Even Snow Dies" thingy Damien was talking about. You can't buy it anywhere because it's a bootleg. I might be able to find it on Ebay, but I've heard that lots of people have been selling fakes.

*giggle* Someone doesn't know what "K" is =) It's one of those popular club drugs that the ravers love. It goes by "K" and "Special K", and the pharmaceutical name is "Ketamine". It's a sedative used for animals by veterinarians. It has a funny, buzzy, emotional numbing effect in humans. The other club drug is ecstasy =) You know there are even some idiots who sell human growth hormone? Dangerous stuff. They say that can put you in a coma.
By Funk Sol Brother (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Does it really make you grow, though?
Sol
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
Depends on the dose, it has various effects on the body other than growth. You really need a doc to perscribe it properly or else you're asking for trouble. You can get high off it, but that's when you're taking way too much and a few of my freinds have seen people hauled out of the clubs by the paramedics as a result.
K is the safer route =)

So Napster is dead... or is it? There are a lot of alternatives popping up like the new Morpheus search tool. Anyone wanna chat about these cool technologies? Can they ever be squashed, and should they be? Is it OK to transfer music files freely, or is it just for greedy people who don't feel like paying?
You know I go back and forth myself. Apparently, there's nothing illegal with making a copy (cassette) of a fav album for someone. But it's illegal for Napster to pass out MP3's even though the trading goes between individuals. That suggests that if I copy a CD into MP3 format and send it to Bry, it is OK, but if I trade it on Napster it is not OK since it is now available to the world.
And of course, the New Napster charges for the service, which is interesting, since it is the people who USE Napster that are actually providing the music files... many illegally "got" - shouldn't they get a cut?
Woah!

Enigma is not Celtic. Enya is commercialized Celtic that gives the GOOD Celtic music a bad name.
If you want REAL Celtic music, check out:
Capercaille, Solas, Danu, Old Blind Dogs, Natalie McMaster, etc.
There's a lot of music to come out of Cape Breton which is totally worth looking into if you've got a liking for Celtic music.
E-mail me if you want more info.

Enya has a new CD out I believe - what is it called? I would like to get it sometime myself, I have always been pretty impressed with her work.
I would love to learn some more about Celtic Music. Angie speaks a little Gaelic.

Sherm you are entitled to your view and I
respect your view. However, I still like Enya as much as I like other Celtic bands. I never have given much thought to liking or disliking a music artists work based how comercial it is. I mean, what does that mean exactly? When does art stop being art and start being comericial? Does success ruin the artist? Or is success the very end product of a very good artist?
Anybody have thoughts on this?
By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 - 05:08 pm: |
There's a Rochester Radio Station called WBER - when a song goes too "mainstream" it is often yanked from the playlist - how can it be "alternative" if everyone's choosing it?
On the other hand, sometimes obscure bands are obscure for a reason - because they're bad!
On the other other hand, with Information Overload, the average person can NEVER be exposed to everything worthwhile in the world. Commercialism is basically someone else choosing what U should listen to (record companies) and playing it until you like it enuff to buy it.
On the other other other hand, they must choose SOMETHING to play on the radio -
I'm all out of hands!

the latest cd by enya is a day without rain.
how about.. the cheiftains?? they are exceptionally good!!!
i got this really awsome cd fromt eh library the other day.. "illumination- Hildegard von Bingen: the Fire of the Spirit"
once i get a job, i'm hoping to order the cd myself.. unless i could get someone to burn it for me... hmmmm .. i like the artwork on the cd jacket, tho' and teh stories... the history of the music by bingen. its sooo old, its almost like celtic music started from this kinda music.. i swear i almost had an out of body experience, i felt sooooo.. spiritually free, and i cant get enough of it.. esp the song- Red River Falling.. i feel like im obsessed.. in a trance.. well, yes, i'm hypnotized. i admit it. :P so what?? its soooo relaxing..
what do you think of teh clothes?? too bad its not a big deal in fashion.. when i get married to whoever, my dress is going to be celtic, i already have the pattern. just waiting to use it :D

Sherm, what's Slan Agat mean?
Hmm, a precursor to Celtic Music - how cool! Do we really know what the music of the Celts sounded like? I know that precious little from their civilisation survived. I think Enya is inspired by the spirits of the ancient Celts - what they precicely sounded like, tho, I can't say - does anyone know more?

*sigh*
I'm very much into Celtic Culture, and that includes the music. It's not just a passing fantsy for me. All I said was that Enya is more mainstream, and DOES NOT respresent what TRUE Celtic music is. I hate that people give labels to something, and then other people judge by those labels. Enya falls more into the New Age genre than she does Celtic... I like her music, yes, but she's not Celtic, in the traditional sense of the genre.

it should have enya on that soundtrack.. i just saw her on the tonight show with jay leno tonight.. and it was announced that its on the soundtrack, from what i understand, its the theme song! its beautiful. my grandmother even cried. i think i did, too. i got her hooked of celtic music, tho' she doesnt have it bad like i do, i love everything celtic, right down to the art, the celtic knox, culture,clothes.. just GUNG HO! the whole bit. even the bagpipes. the "scotland the brave" song in bagpipes. there's history right in all this..
now, enya may not represent celtic music or culture, hey, loreena mckennitt doesnt either.. but they do end up in that category with no fault of their own.. and yes, they are always found in the new age department, along with yanni, kenny g, and yes, even teh truest celtic music. the true cletic music keep getting lost in there, one has to really look for them. tho its not really the ones who works in the stores' fault, its not as widely known, like, say, rap, or rock & roll.
speaking of which.. i have a thought that bugged me for over 2 years.. we all know the categories of music to be won on the music awards shows, like american music awards, etc.. like rap.. etc..
why have there been no category for celtic/new age music?? or even, classical??? (there are well known violinists, like say.. yo-yo ma, etc.. who deserves credit.. ) should these kinds of music go un-noticed..??? or how about,.. just let it slide??? i dont think so.. the musicians spend lots of work on those songs, and there are many who appreciates and loves teh music.. dont they deserve an award?? i think they deserve it alot.. besides, teh celtic music got alot more history, centuries of it, while rap is only .. around 15 years old.. are celtic music invisible in comparision?? shouldnt it be noticed, credited??

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Saturday, January 19, 2002 - 09:57 pm: |

hmm.. anyone ever heard of Iona?? its this group i hear every year at teh chesapeake celtic festival, in teh fall. they are said to play all over the world.. and goes on celtic/renaisance festivals. i have their cd. they even have their web site. i should have it somewhere.. they use bagpipes, bodrhan drum, some kinda flute.. and the singer, barbara ryan, is good.!!!
whether its enya, enigma, iona, yanni, kenny g, mozart, something of those cultures.. even teh meditation & relaxation from pier one, are sooooo relaxing.. when i get soooo upset it tears me up, i pop in those cds, and sit back, and breathe.. and i feel better, at least. of course, modern rock, or even teh classic rock are great, but the celtic/new age music seems to transcend that, not just from history-wise, but also soothes the soul, moves, and what teh hey, it makes me smile, although not make me sleepy, but close enuf.

WHO FRICKIN CARES?!?!?
By Technomage (Houdini) on Wednesday, June 05, 2002 - 11:21 am: |
Fred, I'm going to prtend you didn't post that.
*ahem* Now where was I ? Oh yes.
File sharing is ok in my book because it promotes the music of the musician who created it.
Musicians stand to make alot more from doing concerts and promotional items. (T-shirts, etc.) Then they do from the recorded music which mostly benefits record execs.
Do they make some money from record labels? Yeah of course.
If I like an album I will buy it. Only albums I wouldn't buy anyway get pirated by me. The RIAA may call this a loss of potential sales, but the truth is if I don't think an artist has enough songs on a cd for me to merit its purchase, it doesn't get purchased, period, end of story.
Make a good product, it will sell. Period.
My friend Chris has owned a CD burner for years. He owns every Sting album ever made. You know what I did when I wanted to Ten Summoner's Tales?
I bought it!
When I wanted Weird Al's RWS album, I bought it! Yeah I could have pirated. But the product was good and was worth buying.
The only artists that need to worry about piracy are artists that deep down suck and only make money because the recording industry trys to promote them as the "next hot band".

My Stupid Mouth
by John Mayer
My stupid mouth
Has got me in trouble
I said too much again
To a date over dinner yesterday
And I could see
She was offended
She said "well anyway..."
Just dying for a subject change
Oh, another social casualty
Score one more for me
How could I forget?
Mama said "think before speaking"
No filter in my head
Oh, what's a boy to do
I guess he better find one soon
We bit our lips
She looked out the window
Rolling tiny balls of napkin paper
I played a quick game of chess with the salt and pepper shaker
And I could see clearly
An indelible line was drawn
Between what was good, what just slipped out and what went wrong
Oh, the way she feels about me has changed
Thanks for playing, try again.
How could I forget?
Mama said "think before speaking"
No filter in my head
Oh, what's a boy to do
I guess he better find one
I'm never speaking up again
It only hurts me
I'd rather be a mystery
Than she desert me
Oh I'm never speaking up again
Starting now
One more thing
Why is it my fault?
So maybe I try too hard
But it's all because of this desire
I just wanna be liked
I just wanna be funny
Looks like the jokes on me
So call me captain backfire
Oh, the way she feels about me has changed
Thanks for playing, try again.
How could I forget?
Mama said "think before speaking"
No filter in my head
Oh, what's a boy to do
I guess he better find one
I'm never speaking up again
It only hurts me
I'd rather be a mystery
Than she desert me
Oh I'm never speaking up again
Starting now

Hey anyone had any experience using napster (the re-vamped legal version?). I really can't use iTunes because the DL format is for their stupid iPod only, not MP3 so I can't use anyof their music on my player. Napster seems like the only alternative right now.
I really need some new music to take with me to the gym. Granted, they play some decent music on the loudspeaker system but it ain't always at the tempo I want to hear (techno/trance doesn't mix for weight lifing, Sinatra doesn't jive with running).
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Wednesday, December 01, 2004 - 10:53 am: |
iTunes can convert files to MP3. You download them in their format, go to file properties once you got em, and convert em to MP3. I can show you when you visit.

oh cool, didn't know that. Thanks a bunch
Now if only I could get my stupid parallel port flast card reader to install. Keeps giving me errors. There's a USB port reader but it costs $60+, for a few extra bucks I could just get a newer/better mp3 player since the Lyra I have is ancient. Decisions, decisions.
By Ms. Vice (Nat) on Monday, January 17, 2005 - 02:50 pm: |
Ok this sucks. I really need a full time job. There's so much stuff I WANT to buy for myself.
Right now other than the essentials is that Zen Micro Mp3 player and a TON of music.
I haven't bought music in years. The trance/house I own is soooo 2001, And my old heavy metal/rock collection has tapes missing or so played that the quality stinks. So I need to re-buy a lot- especially since the tape decks on the hand-me-down are broken...
My days of a goth chick back in high school are missed because of the music I used to dig. I indulged and DL'ed a few Queensryche songs from itunes... Been so long since I heard em and now I wanna by mindcrime, re-purchase empire------------
And I am really ticked itunes doesn't have any of their older stuff, luckily their best of album has a couple of the oldies. I also need to re-purchase G-n-r Appetite For Destruction, re-purchase every pre-black Metallica album, toss in some megadeath, some Danzig, and some Judas Priest.
Now... Where did I put my black lipstick?
By Ms. Vice (Nat) on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 11:47 am: |
Can anyone recommend a good on-line mp3 music store other than iTunes and Napster?
Been having billing issues with Napster (and I don't exactly like Napster anyway), and I am so sick of iTunes bullshit. I need alternatives that work...
BTW- dunno if Brenna knew about this, but you can't convert any iTunes purchased music to MP3 format- they're "protected" files, so if you don't have an iPod (or whatever) you need to burn the files to CD (audio format) and then rip the CD to MP3. This isn't an issue if you have an iPod, but if you have anything else it's a pain in the ass, but it works to get around that "protection" BS. If they didn't force their format down your throat, iTunes would be kool.
Once I got my zen micro I had to burn all the music I bought through itunes and rip to mp3. Luckily I'd only bought about 4 albums worth so far. Anyway, from working until 11pm last night I am a bit testy and wanna leave this aggrivation behind- so, once again anyone know good places to get on-line music other than the two mentioned above?
