Ice-T 2.72 VT100 Terminal Emulator
by Itay Chamiel
Of terminal emulators I consider must-haves... this is one of two.
The VT100 emulation is beautiful. It puts up with high speeds. It has Z-Modem download.
I believe BobTerm to be slightly more feature-rich, but BobTerm can't do Z-Modem or VT100.
So, when I call ATASCII BBSes, I use BobTerm. When I need to call a UNIX system or an ISP, I use Ice-T.
Download Ice-T 2.72
NOTE: Ice-T 2.72 only works on expanded memory machines (128K+). An older version (1.x) exists
but I can't vouch for how well it works.
Things to watch out for:
- Keyclick Setting
- When initially using this program, I had a problem with "screaming Js". I won't go through all the details, but if
you have such a problem, try changing the key-click to "Quiet" or "None". I know this tip has helped at least one
other person besides me. I don't know what causes it, but it does fix it.
- Status Call Setting
- As mentioned in Ice-T's manual. Make sure that you set this to "Constantly" with any interface but an Atari 850.
This has to do with the buffer size provided with the interface. Apparently the 850 can have a 2K buffer while the P:R: Connection and others use only 128 bytes. I know that the MIO actually uses 256 bytes per direction, but I haven't tried
setting this lower. If in doubt, crank it.
- Zmodem transfers
- Don't let the sending end go nuts with the block length... This will confuse Ice-T and while the transfer will get
done eventually, it will take a LONG time. with sz on the UNIX system I call frequently I use "sz -bol2048 filename".
You might be able to get away with longer than 2048 bytes, but I am going through a terminal server that doesn't
like it.
- More Zmodem stuff (The "D/L Translation" Setting)
- Set the "D/L Translation" setting under the "Mini-DOS" menu to "None". Period. I had severe problems getting
any file I downloaded to work. Especially ARC files. I really can't think of a good reason to leave this on since most
have a ASCII<=>ATASCII translator program.
