Hey Gerrit, glad to hear it! Congratulations man! Thanks for the little post-up!

Everything is pretty crazy on my end, but life is good.

Here is some good news - I have decided to revive the World Wide LEV page. For a long time, this page has been in sad disrepair and the people were distressed that this once-great bastion of Love and Light had fallen into such a state.

But this time is soon at an end. What was once broken shall be reforged. Beginning with the main page, this site shall be made again as it was. This, I Solenoid, do declare.

Keep the LEV, for even in total darkness, all light is never lost.

Good news - my father has at last returned from China! Thank goodness, it is a good day today.

More good news - I've laid 150 sq feet of tile in my laundry room! More to come, about 1/2 way done with this giant job. Coming next - the renovation of my game room!

Sol

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 01, 2007 - 10:49 am:

240 sq feet of tiles laid now in the laundry room - I am very glad re: this progress. Must purchase additional tiles tonight - I am guessing that 300 sq feet total represents a completely finished laundry room.

Next I will be re-insulating the laundry room and also drywalling it. I might be a dreamer when I say that I would like to have it all done before the weather gets too cold, but then again, a person can't be afraid to dream...

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Wednesday, October 03, 2007 - 11:56 am:

Good news - I got free lunch at work yesterday! It was for me a tasty feta greek sandwich with pitless olives, tomatoes, vinegar - even chips and a cookie (chocolate). This certainly made my day and I will gladly count this as good news.

Also I got a look in the new Apocolypse Warhammer expansion. It isn't released until the 15th. But my store has a *secret* copy behind the desk.

What's the good news in your life?

I never thought it would happen, but after Brenna left me, I found a wonderful new girlfriend, who makes me remember what life was like when it was fun! Her name is Kym, and those who met her already know. For the rest of you, come down on the 1st - 4th weekend and you will most likely meet her, then you will also know.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Tuesday, October 09, 2007 - 09:24 am:

Ha ha, just 2 more days before the cement in my basement is done curing. Once this has happened, I will be able to begin repairing the floor and moving all my STUFF back into place. This will ultimately signal the return of my gameroom within, I am guessing, a month.

Since I have been denied this space (which I lovingly call "my apartment") for just about five months now going on six, I am more than eager to see things go back to normal. This area houses my computer, my game station, my home entertainment theatre, and of course, my gaming table. Pretty much all of this stuff is out of commission right now (minus the computer, which I plugged in last month).

Other areas of the house await this as well including an upstairs bedroom (where all the STUFF is now) and the laundry room (300 square foot room which I am trying to finish right now). Just 2 days left until I can begin!

I am jazzed.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 04:00 pm:

OK, awesome, just passed the 300-tile mark while tiling the laundry room. Huzzah! This project is turning into a bear, though. Have begun ripping out wooden ribs in the gameroom and am repairing all the drywall now. This will be freshly painted and then will receive a new moulding. This will hopefully all happen this week.

Meanwhile, I will continue to tile the laundry room - the goal for tonight is to finish tiling the space beneath the stairs. Once finished, I'll be able to begin filling that area with some items from upstairs. We have an extra room upstairs which is currently holding the contents of the ENTIRE basement. I am looking forward to moving some of these items back downstairs, and the completion of the under-stair space (or as I like to call it, the Harry Potter Guest Bedroom) will allow me to finally get some stuff back in its proper place.

More exciting updates to come,

Sol

Hey good news. This past weekend I just did my 14th geocache find! Woot!

I frickin love geocaching. It's such a fun hobby because it combines technology, websurfing, and hiking, and treasure! Yeah!

Me, Luke, his girlfriend Jen, my cousins Jody and Sarah and the new family addition Angela my third cousin, all went camping last weekend and did some geocaching too. It was da best.

Also, good news. In about two weeks, i will have passed the one year anniversary mark of dating my girlfriend Natalie. She's a sweetie, who knows where its going, but its gonna be a fun ride.

I like to Geocache, too. My codename that I use when we go is "Team Ninjacache." That's awesome. You really do have to use ALL your skills when Geocaching, but not the X-rated ones.

*Listens intently and nods every so often, pretending to know exactly what geocaching is, then realizing he could just look it up on wikipedia, but finds he really is too lazy to actually commit to such activity*

"Ummm, I like it too. It's waaaay cool. And stuff."

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 10:09 am:

Uh oh, Fred, that makes you a Geocache muggle!

*he he he*

Muggle!

That's what a person gets called when they have no idea what Geocaching is.

Don't you wish you knew now?

Your special friend in the forest, Stevie Nicks, explains more here:
http://forestry.about.com/od/mappinggis/g/cache_m_p.htm

By Houdini (Houdini) on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 11:06 am:

Fred its a damm fun outdoor hobby. Basically take the fun of trail hiking, and mix it with the fun of a treasure hunt.

A geocache is a ammo box, tupperware container, pill box, or some other water tight container that minimally contains a logbook and pencil, but usually contains some actual items for trade. A smart person figured out that if you hide this watertight container in the woods just off a trail under a log, or in a hallowed out tree, or in a bush, then took a handheld gps to mark
the approximate (but not allways exact) gps coordinates of about where the container was in the woods, then published it on a website where people could look up the listing, then people could go look up the listing and go try to find the cache using a gps. Some caches are hidden really well and are tough to find, some are hidden in obvious hiding spaces.

All (the they are done right) are set up so that if your not looking for the cache and you are on the trail in question, you would never know it was there, but if you are looking for it then you will find it.

Muggles are non-geocachers btw.

The hobby tends to police itself and most people are cool about respecting it enough not to go find a cache and trash it.

There are literally thousands of caches all throughout the united states.

Just about anywhere there is a city, county or state park somebody has likely placed one, two or more caches. Lots of state trail land has em too.

Woodland caches are the ones I like. There are others of course. Urban caches tend to be in the city and tend to be micro caches and are very small and usually damm impossible to find.

I tend to stick to ammo box caches because i think they keep the goodies inside intact and are usually found on interesting trail hikes.

Its a great hobby because all u need is your car, a hundred dollar hand held gps (you can get used on ebay) and some time earlier in the week to go on the listing website and print off a few caches in a target area you want to find. Its a great way to spend a sunny afternoon. Of course I'd even do it in the winter because trail hikes can actually be fun in winter.

Everyone I have taken geocaching at first thought it sounded cheesey, but then once they went out they loved it. There is a bit of a adrenaline rush you get when you are hiking a beautiful trail and then your gps tells you that you are nearby the waypoint that corresponds to a cache you want to find. Then the game is on to try and figure out where the cache hider placed the cache. Sometimes I come up empty handed, but when its found its always a rush to find the prize.

Most of time its the find that is more impressive then the contents in the cache, but I have gotten some cool stuff occasionally. There is a cool little stuffed gecko doll I got on one fine day out with tony and angie geocaching. He sits on top of my computer monitor at home.

--------------------------------------------------

Canned info from the geocaching.com website:

--------------------------------------------------

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

How do you pronounce Geocaching?

You pronounce it Geo-cashing, like cashing a check.

Are there any other names for Geocaching?

The GPS Stash Hunt, Global Positioning Stash hunt is interchangable. Geocaching has become the standard for the game, however.

The word Geocaching broken out is GEO for geography, and CACHING for the process of hiding a cache. A cache in computer terms is information usually stored in memory to make it faster to retrieve, but the term is also used in hiking/camping as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions.

I have 14 logged cache finds so far and the list keeps a growing.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 04:27 pm:

My list does, too! Houdini and I go quite a bit. It is cool looking for treasure - for that matter, I wouldn't be surprised if New Jersey has more than a few sites where Geocache Treasure can be found. Anyone can enjoy this hobby - if you like hiking, you'll love Geocaching. Me, I just like the treasure part.

4 caches and counting (I thought it was more, but oh well, I guess I am still a noob cacher)

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 04:30 pm:

Example:

The Mendon Ponds Liar’s Cache is for telling whoppers, lies, fibs, untruths and all those other things we wish we could do on a more regular basis. Feel free to enhance your cache adventure however you would like when reporting your find. The best logs will be referenced in the cache description so all can enjoy. (To give credit where credit is due, I got this idea from a geocoin which was a liars coin (which I believe the owner got the idea from yet another cache)).

This cache is hidden in a completely inaccessible portion of the park. In order to access the cache, you will need to bring professional climbing gear, white water boats, spelunking gear, and extreme cold weather gear. It is advisable to bring shotguns (*) to take down the mosquitoes that are the size of small dogs and come in swarms capable of sucking the entire blood supply from a cow in less than ten minutes. Depending on your level of immunity to tropical diseases, you may wish to wear a full chemical/radiological/biological contamination suit. You will need to be comfortable sleeping in the wild as it may take several days of stomping through wild boar infested underbrush in order to find this cache. I would recommend bringing supplemental oxygen or learning to breathe really deep before attempting this cache.

Upon reaching the cache location, you will be bedeviled by the cunningly hidden cache. It will most likely take days of searching sheer cliff faces and underground streams (Did I remember to mention that you may want to bring SCUBA gear?). It would take Superman with his X-Ray vision and the support of blood hounds hours to find the cache -- it is that well hidden. (As a side note, Superman's ability to fly would serve you well also.)

Once you find the cache, you will find that it has been locked with a puzzle so complex that only a Quantum Computer could solve it in less than a week. Upon opening the cache, you will find that it is filled with useless trinkets and a soggy log book with no writing implements.

Good luck, you will need it.

By Houdini (Houdini) on Friday, October 19, 2007 - 11:52 am:

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 22, 2007 - 10:07 am:

OK, bit by slow bit my basement is coming together. Laid all but 30 tiles on the nonfinished side of the basement - the rest must wait until I have either replaced my waterheater or simply had a pan installed beneath it. Deciding which is better - hate spending money when a simple drip-pan will do - then again, the water heater IS 27 years old, and I'd hate it to burst and leak all over my new tiles.

Note - the Gorilla Glue WORKS. It is IMPOSSIBLE to pull up tiles glued down with this stuff. I mean, I tried and the tile broke into a million pieces before it would come up. So I doubt if anything, even flooding, would bring these babies up anyway. No more stinkin' tiles popping up! YES!

So additionally, I've begun re-gluing tiles in my gameroom (also in the basement) and got maybe 20 done over the weekend, which is a start. Will do more tonight and potentially will lay some new tiles also. Finally, the wife and I gave the whole basement 2 fresh coats of white paint. That's right - white. It looks SO much better than that off-pink that was there before. The room seems bigger and brighter now. Decision shall be made tonight as to whether a third coat is required.

So lots getting done. May be able to begin moving game gear, bookcases full of minis, etc, back into the basement later this week. We shall see!

Ah, by the end of the week, the Game Room will begin its journey of furniture re-population.

So here's some good news: I have decided to become a Guitar Hero for real.

That's right.

Something about playing the role of a Rock Star and putting down the devil at his own game has awakened a new calling in me.

So I went down to the music store and bought an acoustic guitar. It was only $100 and it is an electric blue color. This is really quite cool. I am going to my first (wow) jam this coming weekend to be held in Canandiagua.

So far I can basically play one cord - G - but am working on E as we speak. Soon I shall know all the letters there are on my sweet new blue guitar.

Afterwards, Angie and I will probably put out a CD.

Well me and Natalie started our own little holiday tradition last night. We bought a real Christmas tree brought it home to my apartment and decorated it. It was cool and a first for my adult life. I've had my own place for several years now, but never had I bought even a single holiday decoration, let alone a christmas tree. It was cool. My apartment felt like a home, like it was when I grew up in my parents house. We are not done decorating it, but its up and has lights and candy canes on it already and everything. We also bought bulb ornaments for it but to our suprise we forgot that oraments rarely come with the hooks to hang them on the tree. You have to buy those separately. Hey, I didn't know that!

Still we marveled at the six foot balamic fir tree
as it dazzled us with its dollar store mini lights.

Then we watched the saberes beat the islanders in hockey while eating chinese food and life was even sweeter.

Good times.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, December 21, 2007 - 05:56 pm:

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - 09:45 am:

Warsmith,

Seems I am having my own medical foibles these days - broke my arm while falling on snow and ice. I will be stuck with a nonworking appendage for about 6 weeks total, what a drag. The bad news is that it was my right arm/hand. The good news is that I received a new GW vice (the one with the super-strong suction cup) as an Xmas gift, so I will be able to continue glueing my Orks together after all.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, January 03, 2008 - 02:50 pm:

Good news! I just downloaded The Sims 2 for my Cell Phone! If you are a Sims fan, I think you will love it. It looks a lot more like Sims 1, of course, since the graphics are quite primitive. But it is a lot of fun, too.

Only 1 room of the house is shown at any given time in order to conserve screenspace. And it seems that even if you get married, no more than one Sim can live in the house at any given time. Friends can still stop over to socialize with you, however, and it is possible to upgrade the various items in your house (BW TV to Flatscreen, for example).

The game plays a lot like The Sims. The save feature allows you to save your game which allows you to come back for more again and again anytime.

So I've started learning how to play "Yellow Submarine" on my sweet blue guitar. I can almost play it now. It is actually pretty amazing how quickly I've picked this up. With any luck, I'll be able to play it really soon all the way through.

Also I think I am going to download Dragonforce from Itunes. I will probably learn this once I have Yellow Submarine down pat.

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Tuesday, January 08, 2008 - 02:48 pm:

LOL

I'm sorry Sol but I had to laugh. I did pick up the second and third Dragonforce albums recently and have been enjoying them. To give you an idea Sol Herman Li of Dragonforce broke a string during the recording of Through Fire and Flames.

Good job on the Yellow submarine though, I've been thinking of taking the guitar back up again. Maybe I'll be able to expand my playlist beyond the Peter Gunn theme.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Wednesday, January 09, 2008 - 09:32 am:

Warsmith,

You know what? Yellow Submarine is not too bad. I think I have almost got it down. I really know nothing about music (or didn't - now I know a little) but it was a revealation to me that you can be playing one set of notes and singing another. I always (wrongly) used to assume that you were meant to play and sing the same notes. In a way, this is a happy discovery since the notes sung can often be very complex!

So anyway, about Dragonforce, could you remind me which song is featured on Guitar Hero? (It is just one song, right, or are you actually playing through the whole album? In other words, could I buy it for just 99 cents?)

Right, so the band is called Dragonforce and the song I want is called...?

Let me know, I think I will go get it as soon as you enlighten me!

Greyfox is having a B-Day Campout in Pennsylvania - the weekend of April 12th. There will be camping and shooting (I think this will be target shooting rather than hunting) and lots of food and friends I am told. Greyfox welcomes the attendence of his northern pals. Space may be limited, so call him to make arrangements and get more details if interested!

I myself will not be able to attend due to a scheduled server-down that same weekend. But of course, I wish the original party animal all the best as he turns n+1 years old this year.

Party on Greyfox!

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 11:47 am:

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport.
We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.
My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!
The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.
My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.
And I mean he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that?
This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.
They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment.
As their garbage piles up,they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.
Don't take it personally.
Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work,at home,or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.
Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets,so...
'Love the people who treat you right.
Pray for the ones who don't.'

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

D'ja notice all the spam notes this week?

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Wednesday, October 01, 2008 - 11:07 am:

Apparently the current fixes are not keeping out the spam. Perhaps Houdini and I will put our heads together sometime soon to upgrade the whole board to something more secure.

Other good news - I finished the Baby Room! Hooray! The last tile was laid just a couple of days ago. Next job - finishing that basement. It is well underway. Who knows? A giant game of Apoc could be in our future yet.

I have decided to spend some time and new effort working on the LEV. My first new effort will be in the realm of the Happy Nation - a book called The Hundredth Monkey. Those who have read through the LEV pages will already know of it and will also realize that it is not finished. I will finish it. It is located here:

Everybody,

I wanted you to know that I have created a new message board for LEV. It will have a new name, too:

Lev Online.

This is coming soon - so keep your eyes on this space. When everything is ready, I'll give you the URL.

Stay tuned. This new forum is SO MUCH BETTER and will help us beat this bot problem once and for all.

Keep the LEV, my friends, keep the LEV.

Sol

PS - I've started locking topics here, but will leave the Chatterbox open for commentary until the end. After that is locked, I'll see you all on the other side!

OK everyone, the new Board is ready. It is here:

http://www.csh.rit.edu/~tonyl/LEV_SOCIETY/

I'll be working more on the LEV Forum in the next few days - closing down Topics and making new links on the main LEV Board. All messages in The LEV Forum will be preserved in the Hall of the Ancient LEV, as were the messages of our hallowed beginnings before them.

How are we getting set up with new accounts?

By Sol-El of the House of El (Sol) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 01:23 pm:

It is easy! Just follow the link above, register, and you are in!

Try it you will like it

Oh yeah, also worth mentioning - the Chatterbox is now locked up. Commencing with other topic lockup now.

The migration to the new Board begins.

Thanks again Houdini for the Lev Forum and for all the years of joy that it has brought us. Let me now humbly return the favor with the launch of this new board.
