OK, so howzabout some good news?
Yay!
Angie and I have reconsidered the "House in Gates" built in 1919 and decided to buy instead the "House in Farmington" from 1986. The price is nearly the same! We're putting an offer in on it tonight.
Nice feature: Our house is 3 minutes off the Canadiagua (sp???) exit. This is 2 EXITS east of the Lehigh Station exit that Fred usually gets off when he comes to Rachacha. Translation: about 1/2 hour closer to Fred's and 1/2 hour closer to Syracuse as well.
Nice!

Yah! Definately go for the newer house. Old ones aren't as energy efficient and you'd have lots of problems with plumbing and drafty windows =)
By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 08:55 am: |
Yer right Nat! That old house had an old asbestos furnace that was bigger than ENIAC. This new sucker's electrical. Electrical heating, electric stove, and Sol's prerequisite: dishwasher!

I'm Sara, Sceadeau's **wife** (bleh, still getting used to that). Thanks for the invite, Sol!
The wedding was absolutely magical. Ya shoulda been there. It was New Year's Eve--Sceadeau's birthday--in case you didn't catch that. I thought I'd make it easy for him to remember our anniversary
Right now we're in Hattiesburg, Mississippi while I finish my undergrad. We'll be heading to wherever I go to law school (hopefully North Carolina) in a year or so. Sceadeau has a fabulous job working from home as a network security engineer-type-person, so he can follow me wherever I end up.
We just took the name Mazziotta because it's a cool name. (Can I say here?) It means "killer of eight" in Italian. Had it been any other name, I would have kept my own
I've got lots of dirt to spill about Sceadeau and his goings-on since RIT days...I'll start with the introductions page.

Nyce Job, Fred! You always have a way with the newbies - Fresh Blood as you say! I heard that Count Daracul was a REAL historical figure - pretty scary stuff - except that his people considered him a savior! The first real vampire?
Vampy, you are pretty cool! I'd love 2 see some of your art sometime. Did I ever mention that my father is an artist? Mostly he works in oils, but he's done a little of everything. His specialty is painting animals - like wolves, horses, lions, that sort of thing. Also he does portraits! As for me, I'm just a slob with a pen. I love to draw, but I am fairly mediocre. Maybe I'll post some of my art here. Heck, that'd make a keen new topic!

I'm Posting!
Yes, dammit that's good news. I have neither home nor work access to the net right now and must go about lurking near PC terminals in public places in order to post so read and enjoy cause I don't know how long this guy is gonna be in the bath room.
And by the way Sol, [history trivia queen crown on] Vlad Tsepesh known to history as Dracul/Dracula was a real guy. Know as the Impaler to his friends he was known to stake and hand scads of Turks at a time and held picnics under their wriggling bodies as they died. He would on occasion nail people's hats to their heads or slaughter the women and children of potential rival. But was also regarded as a national hero. I think his old castle has been convewrted into an hotel...Wanna book a room?
Gads its been so long since I 'held forth' thusly. I think I'll go read all the other topics, at least unlit I have to slink away from this terminal anyway.

Ranger! Wow, that's great that you were able to post! I miss ya so much! So howzabout ya get NetZero or some other free ISP? Just do a web-search for "free internet" and maybe you'll find something that can work for you!
And as for the picnics of Vlaad the Impaler, I think I just lost my appetite!
Sol
By Kelly (Vampy) on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 - 12:44 am: |
hmm yeah.. vlad was a real man, lived somewhere around tukey, or thereabouts.
dont mean to get off the topic, but do anyone here wish they didnt take "wolf lake" off teh air?? i had looked forward to wednesdays just for that show!! argh.. now, there's only "buffy the vampire slayer", (no offense, buffy) and "charmed". they are great shows.. but that kinda show is only good for wb channel. as for nbc abc, or cbs shows of this kinda genre is just too wierd or strange to the audiences. but, as im sure you all know me well, i loooove strange, adn wierd!! argh!!

By Ms. Vice (Nat) on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 - 10:11 am: |
Umm, you mean Romania (as it is now known), not Turkey. Wallachia and Transylvania are both in Romania. Vlad the Impaler used to kill the poor too. He'd invite them to dine with him, get the drunk and then say "Would you like to be without a care in the world?" (or something to that effect). Then they'd all say "Yes!", so then he'd fence them all up and burn them to death as a way of giving them what they wanted... Well, that's what I heard.

good news?
lemme talk a minute about "good-news".
tryin' to be sarcastic here! ;)
anyways. like i went to a cool bbq.
i brought my $4k laptop.
i left it w/some close friends.
i take it outta the bag today, it has a "HUGE" scratch on the underside (this damn-thing is suppose-to-be titanium! arg!)
i can't stop thinkin' about the damn scratch, so i bring up the apple website.
i find some info on user installable parts. so i check things out and find i can replace the bottom pan (yeah, that scratched piece, and the keyboard - which i had spilled coffee on the 1st week i dot the damn thing!)
so, i decide to call my _local_ macintosh dealer, hmmm... used-to-be "baka" now called "ats" (why can't apple just get off their ass and put a "apple store" someplace in syr?)
i get somebody on the phone, they ask me what i want, i tell them i'd like to speak with "tech support".
i end up talking to some weird d00d sean or shane or something like that. he's quite uninformative, especially when i start asking him about replaceable parts for my freakin' laptop... gah.
so anyways, i get nowhere w/appliedtechnicalsystems on the phone.
they tell me i'll havta send my machine away or something, even after i explained the whole "user" installable parts thing i read about on "apple's" website?!
wtf? aren't they suppose to be an authorized apple dealer?!
i decided to call 1-800-my-apple. ugh!!!!!
to make a long story short, i get a cool tech on the phone, he helps me out in like under 10 mins. i order the parts (both the keyboard membrane, and the bottom piece of crap titanium thingimajig), it ends up costing me like $150 bux, and the cool part about the thing is "appliedtechnicalsystems" quoted me like $200 bux - just to replace the keyboard?!
man! what's with that! i've heard about markups but i smell a scam or something!
at-any-rate, just wanted to share a 'lil rant w/you folks here @ lev. i haven't posted much, and i thought this would be a good opportunity to do so.
share your thoughts! i'd love to hear 'em.

Well, here's some good news:
Tomorrow at NOON I have an appointment to go to this actor's guild in Times Square, and they're gonna see how good I am and we're gonna talk about what I need to do to kick off my career in the entertainment biz... YAY! Wish me luck and stuff.

Hey Phred! How wuz your meeting with the actor's guild?
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Monday, June 10, 2002 - 12:46 pm: |
I did a few sides (script reads) so they could determine where I was as far as skill level. He said I was good, and had a very natural feel about character reads, but there were a few, really technical things that I need to work on, which is like where to breathe and I apparently forgot all my training on how to keep my place (DUH) so he recommended I sign up for this 10-week class on like, "how to audition successfully" cuz he said I would be great on a set, interacting with another actor, but I need to succeed in an audition before getting to the set, and this has become quite an ambitiously long run-on sentence with no end in sight since I'm gonna continue by saying the place is exactly like the HS guidance counselor's office, only for actors and the guy said he thought I was funny and I should try being a stand-up comic.
DEEP BREATH
SO... Things went well and a half-hour meeting turned into 2 hours, most of which was me and the consultants BS'ing and trading funny stories and kinda just hitting it off. So, I guess that means they like me. My class is from 7-10pm monday nights, starting july 22nd. It's called "cold script-reading essentials" So, yah, you might just see me someday and say "HEY! That's FRED!"

Broadband does kick arse, if you got the $$ to pay for it and use the net enough at home to justify
the $40 a month cost.
I wish DSL would drop down in price a little more and compete with RoadRunner.
It would be great to see broadband get as cheap
as dial-up is now.
It was so sweet when my company was paying for
my RoadRunner connection. The company that bought
AppliedTheory took that little company perk away.
Its a bummer.

$40 a month is peanuts, my friend. Peanuts.
By Ms. Vice (Nat) on Thursday, July 18, 2002 - 02:16 pm: |
I got my connection to give me the option to work from home. Since my landlord is due to schedule some major renovations in my house, I need to be here (so none of the contractors steal my stuff) and I don't want to lose valuble vacation time, which I've used up this year anyway. So I can write the $40 per month off as a business expense on my taxes... I think...

Update on my legal battle with my landlord:
I won I won I won I won I won I won...
Well, I won by default, sorta. The enemy dropped the case *JUST* before we were due to request a trial by Jury. They were giving my lawyer the run-around about settling out of court because they wanted to drag this out as long as possible to exhaust me financially; their only "evidence" to evict me was a false affidavit from a super (from the super in the next door building to be more precise, also owned by the enemy- very sneaky but we called them on it.. hehehe). It was kind of like they were playing "musical chairs" with supers, conveniently picking the Super who didnt' work in my building to claim he'd never seen me before. Our answer to that was "Well DUH! Of course he'd never seen me before he's not the super of my building"... They really must have hoped my lawyer and I had no brains what so ever for us not to catch them on it. I had more than enough witnesses and hard evidence to shatter their world anyway.
So they realized:
1) They'd lose.
2) My lawyer has lots of experience handing landlords' asses back to them in court. So they could take their intimidation tactics and SHOVE IT.
3) They'd lose.
4) I seemed to have enough money to pay my lawyer this far into things, so it was safe to assume I had the moolah to pursue this to the end (true).
5) They'd lose.
6) They'd owe me my attorney's fees back when they lose.
7) They'd lose.
8) My apartment has so many uncorrected violations is't not even funny, that doesn't make them look credible, in fact it looks like they intentionally neglect repairs to make my life miserable.
9) They'd lose.
10) They'd lose.
Woo hoo!
I WON!!!
NA NA NA NA NA NAAAAAHHHHH!!!!
*happy dance*

I'm glad that the scare tactics failed and that justice prevailed. See sometimes the system works.

Horatio Hornblower boxed set of DVD's is only 80 bucks! It includes all 6 of the A&E movies, which are like, 90 minutes each, and they are COOL.
Oh yeah, YAY NAT! Does this mean you no longer need the use of that gun?
By Ms. Vice (Nat) on Thursday, October 10, 2002 - 12:41 pm: |
thanks guys, this is one big relief. The only downside being that this whole thing has cost me about 5K in legal fees.
As for the violations, if theydont fix them I can either withhold rent (complictated) or go to housing court and ask for a rent recduction until the violations are repaired. I will probably go with the latter of the two. Less complicated, less legal reprocussions to prepare for.

Well, the good news is I'm working again. (Is it really good news?? )
So I'm doing some full time freelance development work for a company called Utica Corp. They make aircraft and powerplant turbines. Project is expected to last 3 months.
First week or so is on site with my customer then I'll be working from the comfort of my home.
I'm hoping this will get my freelance biz going.
I'm still keeping my eyes peeled for a real job, but if the market still sucks in a few months I can take another freelance job to keep me busy.
Fred is prolly going to point out that I could have kept the gravy train of unemployment insurance going another couple of months, and he's right. But boredom was setting in. I can only play just so many hours of Galatic Battlegrounds ya know! I was starting to dream I was a killer ewok on a mission from god. Spooky!
Now if I could just come up with a cool sounding name for my biz.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 09:40 am: |
Hey now... Was there ever really any doubt about what would happen? The problem with the world today is that everybody wants to rush everything. Why not slow the pace down and enjoy life, savoring each and every moment? I wasn't going anywhere.
And you can keep your ball gags to yourself Nat. There's a rude comment in there somewhere if I switch the words "ball" and "gag" but we won't go there, will we?
By Ms. Vice (Nat) on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 12:13 pm: |
