This discussion is for talk regarding various collectible miniatures games that have come out over the past few years... MageKnight, D&D Miniatures, Star Wars, and the like.

So has anyone tried out the new Star Wars miniatures game? I've purchased my first models, but have yet to play. Is the game any good? What have you heard?

Heh we've been picking those up just to collect them. Though I have been wanting to play the new Fleet one and have enough for a two player game. Maybe I'll bring those with me. Kinda plays like BFG but Star Wars ships.

What's your opinion on the minis, anyway? I've played some D&D minis in the past and have a small hoard of those. Re: SW minis, just a few, not enough to play - haven't talked anyone up here into a game yet.

Well I've never played. We use the D&D mini's in our RPing so we can see who's where and doing what. As for the SW ones I love the detail on the ships.

The game is quite fun. It's fairly simple and easy to set up, and best of all. No building or painting required!

So there's a new game I've discovered and gotten more than a little bit into. It is called "Pirates of the Spanish Main" (although there are many expansions, such as "Pirates of the Frozen North," "Pirates at Ocean's End," "Pirates of the Barbary Coast," and so on.)
The game costs about $4 and for this you get a pack of cards. At first you might think that you are getting something like Magic: The Gathering, but in reality, the games couldn't be more different. When you open your pack, you find that the cards have various pieces that you can punch out. These are put together in order to assemble your own ship, pirate or otherwise. No glue is needed and the ships are made to fit remarkably well.
In any event, you will get enough pieces to make 2 ships - you also get a "wild island" and a number of Gold Coins (pirates need to seek out treasure, after all). You also get a rulebook with the basic and the advanced rules. Sometimes you also get crew members who can improve the way your ship plays.
Did I mention that everything you need to play is included in this $4 pack? They even give you a tiny 6-sided die and 2 measuring tools.
So both ships hit the high seas - competing for treasure and battling each other. This is actually quite a neat game. These days I am leaning toward a Spanish Fleet although there are many more to choose from including French, Brittish, Pirate, Cursed, Viking, and more.
Neat game, check it out.

Hmm sounds like a game GF, Jon, Darren, George, and I tried out on a New Years Eve about 2 or 3 years ago.
If it's the same I think some of us still have those ships so...

I think it is the same game. I bought my first pack about 3 years ago - didn't open it until last week. Surprisingly fun.

Heh you waited 3 years? Wow how much dust did you sneeze off it :P
Anyway we played it that one night and never again so I forget if we had fun or not. I tend to think not because if I remember right one ship was able to go twice as fast as everyone else so was able to get to all the gold and away again before anyone could get to an island.
Maybe if we'd had more options in ships and things.

Yeah, I blew quite a bit of dust off. I was on vacation when I bought it and decided that if I assembled the ships, I'd have noplace decent to store them for the return trip. It was one of those always-wanted-to things. Well, it is a blast now - and Luke is getting into it, so I know we are going to play some of this very soon.

My first ship was the first one printed for the Pirates of the Spanish Main. Howabout that!
