Roleplaying discussion

Anyone here play PbeM? It is one of my guilty pleasures. I think it keeps you more interesting sometimes to play with total strangers. Opinions? Stories to share?

sorry, only tried it that one time with you guys where my character was NSA agent Fred and Sol got mixed up in a global conspiracy/government coverup... anyway, yeah. ;>

Sweet!

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Thursday, January 10, 2002 - 11:57 am:

Did WOTC make all AD&D 2nd edition stuff public domain? Or no? I was just wondering since I've been seeing manuals and such published on the web.

Does anyone remember the details?

TSR published their stuff online before being bought by Wizards, who in turn kept the online resources, even after they were bought by Hasbro, who enjoys having things up online for more potential customers to see.

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Friday, January 11, 2002 - 08:21 am:

So it is all free to download then? I can't believe Hasbro bought D&D.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, January 11, 2002 - 03:46 pm:

No, Hasbro bought Wizards. D&D was already part of the larger package. THey got legal disclaimers up online and stuff, but you SHOULD be able to download certain reference material from there.

IF you're into 3rd edition rules, that is.

Question of the day:

What's the toughest D&D monster you ever fought?

Q2: What's the toughest D&D monster?

My answers follow, what's yours?

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 - 12:41 pm:

hmmm, toughest D&D monster I ever fought... I'd hafta go with Lolth, the demon queen of spiders, goddess of the Drow. Yeah, Jared kinda poked her and pi$$ed her off real good. Yeah, in our campaign-currently-on-hold, she's running around Greyhawk licking her wounds with a personal grudge towards Jared Wolfe (he seems to have lots of people with personal grudges against him. Oh Well.) As far as the toughest D&D monster EVER? I can't really say, there are so many good ones, between Devils, Demons, Gods, Avatars, Great Wyrms, tough choices...

Why, Sol, what do YOU think? :)

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 - 12:44 pm:

D&D Monster Poll

1) The toughest I ever fought was an ongoing nemesis for my L35 Cleric. This creature was a Demon from the pits of heck and it was like 500 feet tall. It was super strong, it had magical powers, and it could trap any character in a sphere of force. This sphere was unbreakable by any normal means, and it would immediately fill with acid. A character killed in this way would be impossible to ressurect. Finally, if he ate you, your corpse would also be lost since his stomach was multidimensional.

My character faced this demon on many occassions, never defeating it. All of his comrades were killed by this creature, never to return.

2) An all-around MEAN D&D creature I might have to argue is the Beholder or Eye Tyrant. I mean, each eyestalk rains down terrible woe on you, the worst being instant DEATH, Disintegration, or Turn to Stone. If I remember right, the Beholder has a powerful Magic Resistance, and with a supra-high intelligence, your characters are more than likely to be outwitted or caught by surprise. If this weren't bad enough, finding the Beholder can be tough as it is usually surrounded by gas spores, a beholder look-alike that explodes when struck, probably killing a character outright, and if not, infesting the person's body with spores that will hatch within 24 hours, killing the person automatically as the infant gas spores feed on the corpse.

Tough monsters - let's hear 'em!

Yah, Fred, the Drow Queen is one NASTY customer, so I am told. I don't think we can count Gods as monsters, tho - I never use the Dieties and Demigods to assign stats to gods - they just always win! Divinity has its advantages. Demons, tho, pretty mean!

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 - 02:48 pm:

Gods don't hafta always win though. Just that, if ya kill em, their presence on the Prime Material is vanquished to their home plane of exiestence, in this case, The Abyss. but yeah, Lolth is now physically in Greyhawk, biding her time and building a power base and when the time is right, poor old Jared gonna be in bad shape. You remember Jared, right? well, he's alot better than he used to be, but no less obnoxious. :)

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Wednesday, May 01, 2002 - 12:58 pm:

Doesn't the Drow Queen devour her consorts whole? It is not always good to be a male drow!

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Wednesday, May 01, 2002 - 02:45 pm:

ummm, Drow society is matriarchal in nature. Men are nothing more than tools and second-rate people at best. They are used as genetic stock, and if they misbehave, the most heinous punishment is to be transformed into a Drider, which is a twisted, perverse parody of a normal centaur, only the man-part is drow and the horse-part is spider. Their blood burns and they are genetic eunichs, and so are incapable of sexual relations of any kind. only 2 male children are ever allowed to be born to any noble household, any subsequent male children being sacrificed at birth, unless of course, one of the other males happens to die before the newborn can be sacrificed (in fact, Drizzt Do'Urden was thirdborn son of house Do'Urden. His family was at war with a rival house the night he was born, and just as the sacrificial dagger was raised for the kill, his eldest brother died in battle. Lolth's taste for blood was appeased, and he was allowed to live as 'second son' of house Du'Orden)

It's scary how much Drow lore I know...

Got Dex?

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 - 01:09 pm:

Faye, this one's for YOU:

I found 2 good miniatures for you to use for Ril in our D&D campaign, but I think you should decide which one to use. They are Reaper miniatures, 1 from their Warlord line, model #14015:Nirodel, Elven Archer & the other is from their Dark Heaven Legends line, model #2442:Aeowyn Silverwood, Female Ranger. Here's a picture for each:

#14015:Nirodel, Elven Archer#2442:Aeowyn Silverwood, Female Ranger

I believe both are priced to sell at right near $3.00 (a piece). Let me know if you want either one, and I shall get it for you. I am still looking for good miniatures for Randall, Thoradain, and Armand. Though I think I have a good one for Armand, but I gotta run it by Jon. and yes, this means I found an adequate mini for Jared, too. YAY! L8R.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 - 11:34 am:

So, in my continuing miniature showcase for our D&D campaign, here is the miniature I have chosen to represent Jared. It will go through some conversion before I am finished, primarily with the sword and possibly with the studded leather armor, but here's the general idea:

Here are the miniatures I figure Jon would like as Armand...

That leaves Randall and Thoradain... But my quest has not yet ended, and I shall find miniatures to represent you all... :)

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 - 02:51 pm:

Well, Randall uses a BIG fraggin sword. Here's a few miniatures I think would do well as Randall, except for the fact that Randall has big ol' angel wings now. Oh well, see what you think:

#2308#2227#2477

There are so many dwarves to choose from, but none have 2 axes yet... My search continues for a miniature suitable for Thoradain.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 - 02:57 pm:

Alright, none of the dwarves on the Reaper page have 2 axes, except for 1, and he looks like a berserker slayer with wild hair and no armor. So, I went with the traditional dwarven look and decided on this Dwarven King miniature. Hope enjoy it, Damien!

#2378

As always, if you want me to order one of these for you, let me know and I can get it done. Reaper minis are cheap. L8R!

By I, (Ranger) on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 - 03:01 pm:

I think I prefer the archer on the right but of course neither quite measures up to my mind picture of her :)
