Magic Rules!

I just had to post something in here.

By Technomage (Houdini) on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - 02:54 pm:

Giant Tim

Odyssey has some seriously naughty cards. *evil grin*

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Thursday, December 20, 2001 - 12:31 pm:

Wow, that is one MEAN card! I'm having trouble catching my breath just LOOKING at it! As if the TAP: do 3 isn't bad enough, he can deal 6 damage with HASTE!

Sol

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, December 21, 2001 - 08:21 am:

But Tim can kill him.

Or a caltrops.

He's a panzie.

:)

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, December 21, 2001 - 08:28 am:

Also, Odyssey no longer has anything to combat creatures from the shadow dimension... There are some really nice cards, but one must know how to use--and how to counter--each one in it's turn.

The precon decks are adequate, but I have not yet lost to any of them (except while using INSANITY!!! which was never meant to win in the first place).

Come visit me for new year's and we can play magic ALL DAY LONG if you wish it...

:)

I'll show those who haven't seen them my new deck designs... Oh yes, I have new deck designs...

By Technomage (Houdini) on Friday, December 21, 2001 - 11:40 am:

Your on!

I won't be able to do multi-days. But a
Sunday - New Years day thing may be possible.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, December 21, 2001 - 01:15 pm:

You know where I live. COME ON DOWN!

If you can squeeze out the extra days, it might be more worthwhile for ya, but I understand if yoo iz bizzy.

It's on, then! Get in touch with me about hangout-ness, all! Jon wants to. I think Darren, too, but he won't know until today is done.

well, it was unavoidable. A new Magic expansion is coming out called Torment. And those dang brain-leeches at WOTC have even named a preconstructed deck "INSANITY". How dare they? at least they don't have one called "DEATH" yet. some nasty cards in there, too... check it out at:

What's the most powerful Magic Card?
And a better question, what makes a card powerful?
Let's have it!

Sol

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Thursday, February 14, 2002 - 04:14 pm:

Dragons blood is a pretty powerful card. I forget the mana cost and all that but it's an artifact and it allowed you to tap it and put a +1/+1 counter on any creature. use it in congunction with valtic keys and you can pump a creature up very quickly.

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Thursday, February 14, 2002 - 05:00 pm:

Knight Hawk,

So you would say that being able to give a creature a lot of plusses is powerful? Hmmm! Other ideas, Magiphiles?

By Technomage (Houdini) on Friday, February 15, 2002 - 12:07 pm:

Help!

I want my decks to kick better arse. I mostly play green decks as you know. The color suits me well. Fast mana, lots of creatures. Anti-enchanment cards, straightforward life-giving that doesn't require an abacus to keep track of.

The problem? Flyers.

What did Wizards do to help green out against flyers? Spiders!

The problem with spiders...

1. They don't fly.

2. They don't have a wide range of spiders to choose from in terms of mana cost, power and toughness.

3. They don't fly.

Why doesn't wizards come out with common flyers for green with a low casting cost?

Actually, this is a similar beef I have with red, but red has direct damage so I can't complain about it much..

Anyone have ideas?

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, February 15, 2002 - 12:26 pm:

Killer Bees. 0/1 pumpable for 1 green 1 colorless
Scryb Sprites. 1/1 for 1 green mana, flying.
throw a touch of blue in your decks, get things like "flight" for 1 blue mana and "jump" which only lasts 1 round and is an instant, but is also 1 blue mana.

Best way to kick more butt is to diversify. Try different things and see what strategy works best for YOU. Also, green has stuff like whip vine, blah blah blah. This is why I usually build green decks as combos with other colors.

Sol, I do not believe there is any 1 "super-card" in magic. My firm belief is that you must build your power using combinations. For example, Jon actually did this in a green/red deck:

1st turn, play a mountain, play a lightning bolt.
opponent goes, plays a land
2nd turn, play a forest, play channel, pump 17 life into a fireball with the 1 mountain to activate it.
opponent dies.

True story. He was playing against George. He had all the cards he needed to win IN HIS HAND on the first draw. powerful cards? no, all common. powerful use of them in combination? HELL yes.

But if I had to choose 1 card that is really really powerful I would hafta go with one of the green biggies, like Verdant Force (8/8; every player's upkeep he spits out a 1/1 saproling) or even Vesuvan Doppleganger (*/*; Vesuvan Doppleganger can copy any creature as it is being played, but cannot copy a creature it has already been)

Just my thoughts. Anyway, I redesigned INSANITY!! Hopefully, it'll start winning games instead of just pissing people off (can I say "piss" in here?) :) L8R!

Actually, this topic would be great for posting decklists and seeing what others think about your deck construction. So, I'll start off by posting my newest incarnation of INSANITY!! Take THAT, WOTC... (steal MY deck-name, will ya?!?) :)

2 collective restraint
2 do or die
2 exclude
4 probe
4 spite-malice
3 spreading plague
4 sway of illusion
4 wash out
2 gravestorm
4 caustic tar
2 haunting echoes
2 cabal ritual
2 last laugh
3 sickening dreams

4 tainted isle
4 darkwater catacombs
6 swamps
6 islands

2 millstone
1 sol ring
1 the rack
1 black vise
1 library of leng
1 howling mine
1 ivory tower
2 caltrops

(The artifacts are kinda like a sideboard. I'll toss em in if I need em.)

I also designed a SQUIRREL deck. That one is yet to come. Be on the lookout for it (I never said I had the cards, but I DID design a decklist) :)

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, February 15, 2002 - 03:26 pm:

Oh, and Damien, if you want to pump up creatures really fast, try this combo for black/green:

2 hell's caretakers
1 concordant crossroads
1 sadistic glee

hellscaretaker concordantcrossroads sadisticglee

It works like this... Concordant crossroads is a green enchantment that says essentially "all creatures have haste" (in a nutshell). Hell's caretaker is a 1/1 black with the unique ability "tap, sacrifice a creature; return target creature from the graveyard to play" And of course, we all know sadistic glee "enchanted creature gets +1/+1 for every creature placed in the graveyard from play" SO...

You play concordant crossroads, both hell's caretakers, and a 3rd creature with sadistic glee (preferably a shadow or LAND-walker). I usually use a fallen angel or Lord of the Pit cuz they have built in creature-sacking. So, start off by sacking a hell's caretaker to the sadistic glee angel. Use second hell's caretaker to tap, sac itself, bring back 1st hell's caretaker, which is now able to tap, sac itself to bring back 2nd hell's caretaker who is now able to tap, sac itself to bring back 1st hell's caretaker... Shall I go on? How high do ya think a creature can get that way? instantly up to the hundreds.

Then to have it pacified or swords to plowshares... That'll ruin your day. :) L8R!

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Saturday, February 16, 2002 - 01:28 am:

Well acctually my best deck was a red and black deck that would allow me to quickly summon lots of skeletons and zombies to defend me and then start slamming my opponent with direct damage spells. Unfortunetly I have misplaced this deck so further expansion is not possible at this time.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Thursday, February 21, 2002 - 12:27 pm:

Yeah, INSANITY!!! got spanked yet again, so I have revised it YET again... The major problem I found is not the power of the cards, but the mana cost of the cards. By the time I get enough mana to play the good cards and have any sort of combo punch, I'm already mostly dead. So I combined cards from old INSANITY and new INSANITY to more evenly spread mana cost, as well as give a little mana injection to the whole deck, so now, although card frequency is a little worse for wear, I have a wide arsenal of annoying to awesome cards with enough mana to cast them all. I shall test it and see if it wins anything... Anyway, I shall keep you posted.

And once I get INSANITY!!! worked out, I will share my vision of a world ruled entirely by SQUIRRELS! PRAISE THE NUT KING!!! :)

Arguably the most powerful creature in the game:

I was reviewing my Green/Black deck today, and I was contemplating switching out the Lord of the Pit with Darigaaz, the Igniter... I shall post both cards below, and you guys let me know which one you prefer being killed by. :)

Darigaaz Lord of Pit

Just so you know, I have 8 lands capable of providing red mana (including 4 Darigaaz's Calderas, which just HAPPEN to be his lair) and a dragon arch (5 colorless artifact, tap and pay 2 colorless to put a multicolor creature from your hand directly into play). The dragon arch doesn't help the lord of the pit much, but it could prove quite useful for Darigaaz...

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 - 11:18 pm:

Dude not so much that I'd rather get killed by the igniter but it's way cooler.

Oh, BTW the new magic set is set to release either later this month or early next I forget name and exact date but will post it tommarrow when I check the computer.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 01:32 pm:

Alright, boys and girls... I have decided to revise my green/black deck. The following combination of cards will make it quite horrible, I think:

darigaaz dragonarch
golem lair

lemme know what you think, ok?

By None of your business (Smokeduster) on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 02:33 pm:

i got a better idea Fred.
make a deck of 59 swamps and a Serra Avatar

By Jeff Montgomery (Jeff) on Wednesday, June 05, 2002 - 11:03 pm:

Fred: Tony informed me you were in question of multicolor rules... This is from a PDF file downloaded from Wizards of the Coast:

Multicolored
A multicolored card has two or more colors. Multicolored cards are printed with gold frames to reinforce this.
A multicolored permanent is affected by anything that singles out any of its colors. For example, a black-and-green creature is destroyed by a spell that
reads, “Destroy all green creatures.” Something that can’t affect a particular color won’t affect a multicolored permanent with that color, so the above
creature can’t be targeted by a spell or ability that reads, “Destroy target nonblack creature.”

You might want to read that carefully -- it means Sliver Queen (RGWBU) can be protected from via any of it's colors -- COP:. It also means taht any creature with protection from a color cannot be blocked by Sliver Queen. (I use SQ just for description -- any multicolor card follows the same rules, limited to the colors in the cost.)

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Thursday, June 06, 2002 - 03:55 pm:

Yeah, I knew all that. It was LUKE who was questioning the rules. I already knew all that, but thanks, it was informative nonetheless.
