Yes, I painted some more Space Orks last night... I was reading through the Ork Codex (2nd edition, natch) for ideas on uniforms and stumbled across the various Ork clans. Evil Sunz, Bad Moonz, there are so many... what's more, my army can have Orks from multiple clans in it. It is a little confusing. For example (I think) Bad Moonz can have better weapons, etc, so if I paint these guys as, say, StormBoyz then I technically can't benefit from what Bad Moonz have to offer. But I can't make 'em ALL Bad Moonz - if I do, I miss out on other benefits from other clans! This bites, cause I have to buy lots more figures of the same kind just to make sure I have enough extra of each clan, and with Orks being, like, 10 points a piece to field, I already need, like, 75 Orks just to play at all! That's an expenditure I'd rather not make 6 times over. Oi! Anyone know more than me? I am really JUST starting out with Orks, and honestly haven't read the Codex thru yet, but advice anyone? If you have Orks or have faced Orks, that is?
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
I tell all my friends that I hate painting, you know, but as I was telling the 20th person this (Angie's room-mate) I realized that maybe, just maybe, I was starting to like it. Hmm. I may finish up some of these guys yet. In fact, I'd really like to paint w/ Uncle Bill tonight. I have green-painted all the primed Orks I have (minus the unglued ones) and am ready for more. Of course, WarZone would be on my painting Agenda at Uncle Bill's, but I want to base the rest of my Orks, too. Thanks again Fred (and Jon?) for all those Orks... who knows? Maybe I'll have a force done by New Years? At this point, I'd like to!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yes, tonight I will battle Uncle Bill again on the New Battletable of Death. I will be reviewing my Cybertronic army since Uncle Bill pretty much squashed it last week. Oof! Well, at least I can say that he didn't slaughter me... I had 9 points, he had 10... but that was all he needed for his Sudden Death victory, so there you have it! ;)
I shall be busy loading my dice tonight, maybe getting some troops with some kind of long range ability! ;)

I have primed the Devastator squad and my plasma gunners. Only a matter of time before they're done... Muahahahahahahahaaaa!!! ;>
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Ha ha ha, I have reclaimed my good name in a battle against the famous Uncle Bill! The Cybertrons kicked arse! In fact, it was a shutout... 10 victory points to 0. Choufie! My scorpions are sleek and effective. They move across the battlefield with the greatest ease and then surprise the enemy by blasting them with a powerful weapons-blast. The scorpion also does not pay for terrain. Uncle Bill was a good sport, though, and we ate pizza.
I also got to base my remaining orks and gretchen. In the end, the plastic models just snap together! Almost no glue was needed. Wish I'd known that sooner! ;) I'll green-paint them today, which will bring me up to 40 orks and 80 gretchen.
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
yes, Uncle Bill says I should paint my orks black and white (the standard Goff uniform - only "fancy boys" use anything other than black or white). This could work well - maybe I will not need to paint any white since they are primed white... hmmm...
Fred, do you and your friends prefer 2nd edition or 3rd edition 40K?
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
A little of both. We like the complexity of 2nd ed. as well as the simplicity of 3rd ed. Go figure!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yes, I am happy to say that I green-painted the rest of my orks last night. That brings me up to 80 Gretchen and 34 orks. I actually have 6 more orks, but they are unprimed, and therefore so far unpainted. Maybe Uncle Bill will prime them for me. Wow! I painted for, like, 6 hours yesterday just to finish 1 / 2 of them! At this rate, it will probably take me 12 hours per color, and if there are, let's say, 5 more colors to go, that's about 60 hours left until my orks are completely finished. Oufie! I need to pick up the pace there.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
I'm painting my 6 new marines tonight with Jon. After that, I'll have a totally painted 1500-point Space Marine army. Next goal: finish Sisters of Battle (1 seraphim squad to go). Also, paint me 'lil Dwarven Blood-bowl team. We'll see what happens from there... (Perhaps an Imperial Guard Army?) Who Knows? ;>
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yeah, Fred, did you ever play Epic 40K? It seems really cool, what with dreadnaughts the size of Gretchen and literally hundreds of troops at your command. I wonder how much like 40K it is? The starter set includes Space Marines and Orks. Kool! Too bad it is SO expensive (like 70 bucks). I am really getting into this Ork thing, BTW. I am a painting maniac! I went to Millenium and bought 2 more bottles of paint, black and brown. I will also soon need some white, yellow, maybe gold, silver, and bronze. I painted a little last night - only blackpainted 3 Gretchen - but I like the way they're coming along. I know I want them black and white (like Chess Pawns, kinda) but I had to try a few color schemes before I found one I liked. Well, all my orks are waiting in formation on the living-room table, their appetite for paint whet with the initial greening. More to come!

I went to Jon's last night with the intention of painting, but we ended up playing Baldur's Gate all night (until like, 1am). I hafta work late tonight again, too... I'm a zombie right now. Good news is: I may be able to trade this after-hours time in for the 2 days I'd need to work between Christmas & New Years... If I work 6 extra hours tonight, I'd have a total of 16 hours saved up, which means 2 full work-days off, which means I'd still hafta come up with a way to get that 1/2 a wednesday off... A sick day won't fly... A personal day, maybe? I'll find out if I could grab a half a personal day on that day... I'll hafta get the ball rolloing today, tho--to get approval and all...
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
My Orks are slowly but surely coming along - they are about 2/3 blackpainted. I remind you that I have 120 figures right now, all in progress. I also like to read the Warhammer 40K rules on my Lunch. There is a lot to learn. Some is like WarZone, some not. Most interesting difference is the fact that WarHammer uses d6's almost exclusively... it seems a little funny at first, what with rerolling so much, and a -2 in WarZone translates to something like a -1 in WarHammer 40K (like soft cover, for example). I realize that this is just a surface difference, but it is interesting all the same. Movement is very similar.

My 1500 point 3rd edition Space Marine Army is DONE! I finished it on Sunday. Now, I just need to paint 4 scouts with sniper rifles and 3 Razorback transports: then I'll be done with me 2000 point army, too! I can't wait for the Sisters of Battle Codex to come out--I already have like, 750 points worth of Sisters painted up... I just wanna get them finished and fieldable, cuz they look so darn kewl! Also, they can use Imperial Guard as allies, so I think there's my answer: Elite core of Sisters, with some mobile-infantry units from Imperial Guard--with tank support, of course. I will begin working on an army list for this new unit (as soon as I can get a hold of the new IG codex, as well as when the Sisters codex comes out). L8R!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Sweet job, Fred! Hey, is there a 4th edition 40K? I read that there was, assumed it was a misprint, but hey - does anyone know about the different editions? And 1st edition - what's that? Just wondered. I used to play 1st edition WarHammer Fantasy... but that's a little different.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Actually, the original, original warhammer was called "Rogue Trader" and was a pamphlet-sized rules compendium, with a story background and the option for people to customize their own universe. This is often referred to, mistakenly, as "1st edition" when it was really "Rogue Trader". 1st edition was released later, when Rogue Trader became a little more popular and well-developed. There were races (which no longer exist) like the Squats (Dwarves) and Necrons. Also, this is where the current political scene was developed, with the empire of man, the Space Marines, Adeptus Arbites, etc. The rules were very cumbersome, and the major baddies were the Eldar. In second edition, the rules actually became more streamlined, while at the same time expanding the rules on Psyckers. New weapons and miniatures were produced, and the first codexes were printed out. If you look closely, the second edition rules books still have entries for the squats and necrons--this is because the rules didn't change really all that much--just the way the game flowed. Now, 3rd edition is out. People may be referring to this as 4th edition, after hearing the 'legends' of Rogue Trader (Which, I must say, was a REALLY kewl game). More from me at another time--me sammich beckons!!!

So Uncle Bill squashed me last night during our game of WarZone. Agh! Although I did manage to get 3 Victory Points, Uncle Bill got 13 - I barely fired any shots and spent the whole game trying to advance into hand-to-hand. As much terrain as there was, it was just too difficult to advance without getting shot. I eventually closed into hand-to-hand, but it was too late. I'd suffered heavy losses, and his machine guns took me out! Agh!
Any strategy tips for the player with the strong hand-to-hand force vs. the guy with the long range weapons?
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Hey Fred, my orks came from you... and also Jon, right? Please give him a big Thank You for me! It took a little while to get started on them, but I am genuinely dedicated to the cause now and wish to have them all painted SOON.

Strategy tips:
First of all, does Warzone have any rules concerning target choosing? I know Warhammer does. If it does have a rule where you need to fire at the closest target within line of sight, you might wanna swarm a bunch of cannon-fodder little guys in front of your tough hand-to-hand guys, and just roll forward in an ugly, massive, screaming mob. Like the Orks.
Are there rules where other troops cannot fire into close combat? If so, get yourself a fast-moving squad, or a squad in a transport vehicle that can deploy really quickly. You get them into close combat with like, 3 or 4 units at once. Trick is, they need to 'tie up' those units for a couple turns while you get your big guns in place, or can bring in your heavy hitters for close combat support. If you manage to survive with the right turn sequence, you can end up getting a 'free turn' of firing on the massed figures of your opponent as they try to regroup from the close combat. Kind of a 'Queens Gambit' sorta move. I tried to do this against Uncle Bill's Orks with my assault marines, but it worked so well, they survived in close combat until the end of the game, so I couldn't bring me guns to bear on him. Chance you need to take, tho. Hope I helped!
Sol, let me know if any of these tactics apply to the rules of Warzone, ok? L8R!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Ah, I'll explain WarZone a little more... all the rules you mentioned do exist (hard to fire into close combat, must fire at nearest model, etc) but the trick: I had only 10 models (total) on the table. WarZone is cool because it is on a much smaller scale... it is bad to sacrifice your models for strategy's sake because you get so few. Uncle Bill probably had twice as many as me, but they were weaker, only 1 hit killed 'em, etc.
The mechanics are really very similar to WarHammer 40K otherwise... Only your squads have from 3 - 8 troops in them (mine rarely have more than 3).
Tricky!

That's right, Sol has all the best WarHammer Sites! This one has descriptions of scenarios you can play, including some awesome Ork scenarios. One called "Droid Hunter" involves a crashed spaceship with a heavilly armed robot. The robot emerges from the pod - both sides, Ork and Space Marines - fight for control of this alien technology all the while trying to avoid or destroy the opposing forces!
Check this out, as well as the rest of this well-done site. Info on Orks, Marines, Tyranids, strategy, this site is not only extensive, but beautifully done.

Kewl site, by the way... I shall try the "droid football" scenario with Jon, using 3rd edition rules, of course--it tends to level the playing field due to similar move ratios... I'll let you know how it works out!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yeah, I want to try out that Droid scenario, too, sometime... when my army is put together. Coolness. I have just 8 Orks left to paint - might have finished them last night, but - you know - Angie came over, and we, well, had fun doing stuff. By the time we were through, I was too tired to paint. But I digress. I will finish them tonight 4 sure, then on to brown. Ho!

Glad to hear they're getting done Sol! You think by New Year's you could field 'em? ;> I got the Imperial Guard Codex on Wed. It looks pretty kewl. I may build a Guard unit to be allies with my Sisters--they need all the heavy support firepower they can get. I'm playing again (FINALLY) on Sunday. I'll be using my 1500 point Marine Army. I hope I do OK. L8R!

Yah, I have a copy of 2nd edition rules but not 3rd... I wonder if they sell 3rd edition loose, I mean, without buying the boxed set (space marines and eldar I think).
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yeah, Fred, trying to get them done in time for New Years! Actually, I could almost field them now, unfinished tho I am, but the hardest part is almost done (I paint my bases black, and that is why black is taking me so long). I also like to paint a little triangle on the base to show which way they fire. I would lean heavilly toward a 2nd edition game, since that is what I am capable of making an army for (I have no 3rd edition rules at all) - maybe something small, 1000 pts max, even 750. Naw, 1000 would be good. I may proxy some Cybertronic Death Droids for Dreadnaughts - we'll see. It'd even look Orky if I painted it green! Ha ha!
My next color will be brown - I should be starting brown today since I'll have a good amount of painting time. Paint, paint, paint!
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yes, you can buy a third edition rules book for like, 35 or 40 dollars. Mebbe it's less--but I do know it be THICK. If yer capable of fielding a 2nd edition army, then you're also capable fielding a 3rd edition army, only half as big. I think Uncle Bill has a 3rd edition Orks Codex... You should prolly borrow it to see what points values the new figures are. That's really all you need to know, anyway--points values for your own army list. Also, Codexes are only about 15 dollars a pop, mucho affordable. I say, if you can field a 2nd edition, we could go for it. Jon and I both have 2nd edition rules, and Codexes, and he would maybe even be interested in playing a game with 'em (so he can field his Tyranids with a greater effectiveness). Also, with multi-player scenarios, you don't need to field as many points. You wanna do it? Also, I think I know what to get you for Christmas! ;> Also-Also, I can show ya the NEW Encounter!!! L8R!

Let's say I have an entry like this:
Ork: 12 points
"Orks carry bolt guns and have flak armor."
"You can upgrade to a bolter for 2 points."
"You can upgrade any model to mesh armor for 10 points."
***********
If I just get the regular slob (bolt gun, flak armor) do I have to pay for the stuff, or is my ork just 12 points?
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
You get whatever's in the entry for the price listed. Upgrades cost the points that are listed for the upgrades. Also, this sounds expensive to me... 2nd edition, right? Get 3rd edition--it's actually simpler. I can help you with that too, Sol... ;>
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
I don't have any problem with the complexity - I love it! But darned if I could find a rule for it. Why the confusion on my part? Well, in WarZone, you have to pay for all your weapons.
If I have time to do so, I will also put together a 3rd edition army. Right now, I have been working through the 2nd edition rules, but the vast majority of my spare time so far is going to painting. I'll try to borrow Uncle Bill's 3rd edition book soon, but am not likely to do so until figures are finished (they're coming along nicely). Also, since I own less figures, I don't know if the lesser point cost is such a good thing! I leafed through the Ork Codex (2nd edition) and I think I could do a (2nd edition) army of up to 2000 points, I think 1500 would be more comfy. 1000 - no problem.
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |

By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
PS - that guy I don't like, tell him I like him again! :)
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Sol, Jon has stated his interest in the big party... He has both 2nd AND 3rd edition rules. Also, I wouldn't worry about army size right now--I have it in good confidence that Santa will be nice to you this year (you haven't been naughty have you?) ;> Jon prefers 3rd edition, tho I'm sure he wouldn't mind doing a 2nd edition game, just so he can use his Tyranids with their special rules. It's been so long since I've played 2nd that I wonder if I still remember how...
PS--you can tell that guy yerself; he's Ranger's husband... And she posts in here all the time! ;>
Yeah, Sol: Warhammer does things kinda wierd... They say things like:
Space Marines Squads consist of 1 sgt. and between 4 & 9 Marines. Marines are 15 points each. They are equipped with boltguns and power armor. Up to one model may be given a choice of the following: flamer for 6 points, plasma gun for 6 points, heavy bolter for 8 points.
A second model may carry either a rocket launcher for 8 points or a lascannon at 10 points.
The sergeant may trade his boltgun for a bolt pistol and close combat weapon at no additional cost.
The sergeant may be upgraded to veteran sergeant for an additional 15 points. Veteran sergeants may be given additional equipment from the Space Marines Armory.
Now, what this means is that you build your unit per model-- I have a 10-man squad, so that's 150 points. One guy has a plasma gun: 156 points. One guy has a rocket launcher: 164 points. I upgraded a veteran sgt: 179 points. You see the pattern? If I dinna buy any weapons, all my guys would still have the basic equipment--it's paid for in the model's template. So, a basic, 10-man marine squad is 150 points*
*(3rd edition points values used, for convenience sake)

OK, cool man! I like it. My Orks are totally black-painted, green-painted, gold-painted, blue-painted, and pink-painted. Still need to do silver (in progress), brown, and white (somewhat optional since I primed 'em in white). Then any detail work I need to do will be done. Whew! Time is closing in on me fast, but at this rate, I think I will finish painting in time to give serious consideration to strategy and army-building. I should be able to finish them all within 2 weeks (I hope) - that's cutting it all a little close. Plus I need to paint my 2 Ork Warbosses - that pretty much covers it - I may be able to borrow a few pieces from Uncle Bill, too.
I've been naught-er, good! Good good me! Good good!

Ummmm... Yeah. ;> Hey, if you wanna, bring unpainted models down with you, and Jon & I will help ya get 'em done! If you wanna, that is. I know that I sorta take pride in my own work, but I have enlisted Jon's aide on several previous occasions, and I have been satisfied with his work. All you need is to tell us your painting scheme, and we can make 'em uniform for ya.
Well, The Encounter's store-army is nearing completion. From what I'm told, it's just gonna be one squad of Marines. Black Templars chapter. They're at my house, 'cuz I built 'em. Also, I'm painting them. They should be done by Wednesday, which is the weekly Warhammer seminar-night, where Jon teaches all the kiddies how to play. This wednesday is going to be Sisters of Battle vs. Dark Eldar. EEK! ;> I hope it's a good match-up. I have another Christmas party on Wed. night. I hope to recover by New Year's... ;> L8R!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yeah, I'm pretty particular when it comes to painting my own figures, but not to worry - they'll be done! youbetcha! I suppose for a big 3-way, the points should be low (unless 1 game is all we want - we could leave it set up I suppose!) What do you suggest? You, Uncle Bill, and Luke did a 1500, right? 4500 for the 3 of ya? And that took all night? Could be scary! Or we could play that you are OUT if 1/2 your army is demolished. I dunno. We could also fight to obtain a certain objective. Maybe we could have, like, a nuclear bunker on the board. Figures inside the bunker would be safe from the blast. Object - get to the bunker, set off the bomb! Ha ha ha ha! A figure would have to be in contact with the detonator for a full turn (or two?) for it to work... and if the enemy is in the bunker with you, those troops will also survive the blast... but believe me, the battle would go faster! The game would need to be set up in such a way as to make the fight over the bunker a challenge - not just a race. For example, no cover surrounding the bunker might be a choice.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
It would have to be a die roll. For each turn the bunker is intact, you roll a D6--on turn 1, you'd need a 6 for it to blow. Turn 2=5, turn 3=4, turn 4=3, turn 5=2 turn 6=BOOM! That way, no matter what, the building will go off. What needs to happen is this:
A Holy Relic lies within the reactor, from some ancient race. The objective would be to get to the reactor, stop it from blowing, retrieving the Relic, and making it back to your base. This makes it complex enough that we could just let the reactor blow, with one side grabbing the relic and ditching--or we could deactivate it, then grab-and-run, or just blow the piss outta each other for supremacy... I could also work on individual army objectives, if you like.
Yes, a decent kill zone would have to be established. Also, there are some wicked kewl scenarios in the 3rd edition rules book we could try. I'll talk to Jon, and we'll get it set up--have no fear. L8R!
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Also, the reserves rules are fun to play with. You keep some of your forces off the table, then each turn, you roll a D6 for each unit. Using the same method I mentioned earlier, you determine when your reserve forces charge onto the battle field. It sometimes makes the battle more realistic, especially if your position is being overrun by hordes of evil Tyrannids--then, suddenly, 3 units of crack troops appear on their flank and charge through them, decimating their ranks in a glorious charge for the Imperium! you get the idea. I'll come up with a good scenario for the party, don't worry about that. Mebbe even a mini-campaign, where you sustain your losses from battle to battle... Also, you can gain experience this way and make your characters get kewler. L8R!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Kool! I like the idea. Sounds like fun. But try not to bring in characters that are TOO tough for me (unless these experienced characters have correspondingly higher points-costs! Then I'll deal). Cool, man - scenarios sound awesome. I also wouldn't mind playing that droid scenario if you guyz didn't already do it, if so, I'll just play it w/ Uncle Bill sometime.
My figures look GOOD. I could play a game with them at this point, but they still need brown and (somewhat less importantly) white. Then detail-work and I'm done with them! It is quite a site to see all those Orks lined up on the table with weapons gleaming in Gold and Silver! Estimate 8 days till completion. Wish me luck!
Sol

Characters ALWAYS cost more points than regulars. Also, special characters (the ones written up by Games Workshop) usually are only used if all players agree to them--so that means we all get to look over the templates, and if we don't like one of them, no special characters. For this reason, my army contains no special characters... Jon's army does, tho... ;> L8R!

I have avenged myself at the gaming table. I won last night's WarZone with Uncle Bill... flawless victory. Not only did Uncle Bill score no Victory Points, but he failed to even WOUND one of my troops at all. My armor stopped everything - the Eradicator Deathdroid's self-repair mechanism was nice, too.
Half of Uncle Bill's troops were obliterated and we called it a game... I was in a position to inflict several more heavy hits, too. Cybertronic Rules the Battlefield! Ha ha ha ha ha!

Necrons suck. They're an ancient race of robots, the origin of which are shrouded in mystery. Nobody knows why they fight, where they come from, or how many there are. They usually show up around ancient artifacts, fight with an unrelenting ferocity, and then vanish without a trace. They're as tough as space marines, they have the same fearless rules, but they get an additional rule--when they take wounds, don't remove them, just lay them down. During the next Necron turn, for each model laid down, roll a D-6. On a 4, 5, or 6, the model returns to combat, but only if it's within 6" of a friendly unit. Otherwise, the model vanishes mysteriously (it goes home). I observed a skirmish between Jon's marines and Jose's Necrons last night. Jon won, but it sucked bad. Also, the Necrons vanish if they are reduced to 25% strength, with no victory points being granted. Scary, huh?

This was obviously the work of a Genestealer cult. Settlement after settlement were found to be empty, the only signs of disturbance being large, leathery egg-sacks, apparently already hatched. Finally, yesterday, contact was made...
I decided to disperse the detachment in a pincers-assault formation, with the devastators and Bhaal Predator on our right flank and Brother-Sergeant Malichus' Assault squad and Celeborn, the Old Dreadnought on our left. I led the Terminator squad in the middle of our line, bolstered by 2 mechanized tactical squads in Razorbacks. Almost immediately after the line was set, the enemy was upon us.
Tyranids. A mass of them. First contact was made by Sgt. Malichus. A lictor appeared from the thick forest, almost on top of him. After an unsuccessful attack from the alien monstrosity, Sgt. Malichus and his assault marines dispatched it thoroughly, alerting the rest of us to the threat. The second tactical squad disembarked into the woods in search of more 'bugs' whilst the devastators fired their heavy weapons at a carnifex on the enemy right. I ordered the terminators to open fire on the behemoth as well. The Bhaal predator took fire from one of 2 hive tyrants, and had its left track disabled again. I shall make a note to have the techmarines have a look at it at a later date.
Sgt. Malichus engaged a brood of Hive Warriors, killing 2, then sustained casualties under heavy return fire. Winged gargoyles moved to surround the second tactical squad in the woods, and the horde of alien claws and flesh surged forwards.
The Bhaal Predator eliminated an entire brood of Hive Warriors on the enemy right, whilst the devastators dispatched the carnifex, which drew dangerously close to my position. A second carnifex on the enemy left, near the woods, destroyed the razorback of the second tactical squad, and the nearby hive tyrant disabled Celeborn. I ordered my loyal terminators to open fire on the alien leader, felling him in a rain of bullets and missile-fire.
Malichus ordered his remaining troops to fire upon the flying gargoyles, causing severe damage to them. The remaining carnifex charged into the squad, spitting vile acid at them before drawing close enough to attack with its massive claws. 2 marines fell to the acid attack, but brave Malichus stood his ground parrying fully 3 attacks from the great tank-killing beast. This boosted the morale of his troops, who swarmed upon the mighty behemoth, chopping at it with their chainswords. 2 more brothers fell, but in the end, it was sgt. Malichus who slew the beast himself, using his powerfist. Casualties were heavy, however, and only 3 brothers remained.
The battle in the forest didn't fare so well. The tactical squad there was completely overwhelmed by hive warriors and genestealers. They fought valiantly, and were shining examples of the emperor's glory.
Our right flank held strong, destroying half of the swarm of termagants, as well as genestealers. I was alarmed, however, when 3 of my terminator brothers simply yelled and fell over--the victim of an alien psychic attack. I ordered a withdrawal even as Malichus eliminated the last of the gargoyles. For some reason unknown to us, the aliens simply ceased their advance and scurried back over the ground they had gained on us. Perhaps their resolve was broken upon witnessing the might of the Emperor's finest warriors. I immediately ordered an air strike from our Thunderhawk Gunships to rid the area of infestation, then collected our wounded and lifted off this vile world. Although we claimed victory by driving off the alien hordes, I must wonder at the cost of such a nominal victory.
I strongly urge the Imperium astropaths to mark planet LV539 as a tyranid-infested world. Recommend orbital bombardment of planet, in the hopes the hive ship will be destroyed as well.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP:
When using sharp implements, such as X-acto knives, razors, etc... BE SURE YOUR FINGERS ARE SAFELY AWAY FROM THE PATH OF THE BLADE. Trust me. You don't want to have the pleasure of sinking such a sharpie-thing into your tender, sensitive, fingertip-flesh. (it HURTS. ALOT.) That is all. Carry on. Thank you.

Hey--I finally finished off my 2000 point Space Marine army. And Jon just gave me all of his Sisters of Battle! Soon, I will have a full-sized Sisters army with which to romp upon alien butts... Oh yeah--I have a Land Raider now... Fear me. ;>

40131.08.05:1345>>>Transmitted report from Dark Reapers Detachment Epsilon-6:
Imperial-held world: Armageddon. Brother-Captain, receive your orders:
Word has reached our librarians that the Orc Warlord Ghazkul Thrakka, previously thought slain in the second battle for Armageddon, has raised an invasion force with the primary goal of taking the planet. Even as this transmission is being sent, Orc Rocks and fleets of greenskin ships approach the sector. Commissar Yarrick himself is in command of the joint Imperium forces on the planet... YOU ARE IN NO WAY TO INTERFERE WITH HIS OPERATIONS.
Brother Captain, land a rapid strike force of your choosing on the planet Armageddon, in the vicinity of the Hive City Hades. From there, coordinate your efforts with other Imperial forces already on planet, and begin rapid deployment to the city's waste processing facility. There are ammunition stores, fuel, and a Holy Relic in the Underhive: THESE MUST NOT FALL INTO ENEMY HANDS. Grace of the Emperor be with you...
40131.08.13:0945>>>Battle-report from Dark Reapers Detachment Epsilon-6:
After a 5 day warp-jump, we landed on Armageddon at Hive Hades. The Imperial forces already there seemed beleaguered, but morale was still high. After corresponding with Commissar Yarrick, who sent his personal best wishes, we set out to the waste processing facility, which we were informed was overrun by Tyranids. I gladly ordered the march to destroy more of the alien monstrosities. One thing gnawed at my thoughts, however: why would the Tyranids take actions to seemingly aid the orcs in their endeavor--unless these bugs were here for their own, unknown reasons.
The first thing we noticed as we approached the facility was a towering behemoth, taller even than the observation tower/control room. It was a Tyranid Heirophant Bio-Titan. Many brothers faltered in their step as we approached the beast, but with a single prayer to the Emperor and a command from me, we deployed along a previously-dug earthworks barricade along a ridgeline, across the river from the facility. Celeborn the dreadnought bolstered our left flank with myself and my command squad, as well as our Razorback armed with twin heavy bolters. Further down the line on my right, second squad was fortified in front of their Razorback. Our center was held by Sgt. Galron and his devastator squad, supported by Sgt. Malichus, who had his assault squad mounted in a Land Raider. On our right flank, near the waste storage tanks, was the first squad supported by their Razorback, as well as the Bhaal Predator, which faced a menacing, red, sluglike giant with the claws of a Lictor AND a Carnifex as its weapons. I also counted one Carnifex surrounded by 6 genestealers and a dozen or so hormagaunts directly opposite my position, supported by 3 hive warriors and a hive tyrant on a catwalk just above and behind that. The center of their line was held by the massive Titan, whose left side was supported by another hive tyrant and a swarm of termagants. Opposite 1st squad were 2 'brain-bugs' and another brood of 6 genestealers, supporting the slug-like creature. After a moments' silence as the two sides gauged each others' strengths, I ordered all heavy weapons to fire at the Titan.
I gave orders to allow the beasts to advance into our line of fire, not wanting to damage any parts of the processing facility. As I suspected, the Tyranids swarmed toward our position, firing quite ineffectively as they came. Our first Lascannon barrage was extremely successful, with the first shot from the Land Raider burning a hole through the massive head of the Titan, which plummetted where it stood, spewing vile gore from the horrible wound to its nerve center. There it twitched and sputtered for the entire battle, apparently trying to understand why it was dead. The devastators fired on the 'brain-bugs,' killing one, and my squad and Celeborn fired at the genestealers around the Carnifex, killing them all. Our Razorback, as well as both the other Razorbacks fired into the Carnifex, killing it before it even reached the river. Mysteriously, a squad of fallen marines from the Legion of the Damned teleported on our right flank, and fired all of their ordnance at some hidden enemy on our right. I would find out later from spotters in the area that there were indeed 2 Lictors lurking near the storage tanks, and were it not for the Legion, our right would have suffered severe losses.
As the fighting intensified and the Tyranids drew closer, 2 brothers from 1st squad fell to a psychic attack, and the giant red slug-creature ripped its mighty claws into the front armor of the Bhaal Predator, destroying it. Our counterattack dealt swift justice, as the nearby Razorback fired its Lascannon at nearly point-blank range into the muzzle of the crab-beast, killing it. This freed up the rest of our heavy weapons to be brought to bear on the hive tyrant in the center of the field, which was getting too close for comfort. I ordered Sgt. Malichus to deploy and cross the river, firing at the termagants as he went, then await a heavy weapons barrage before assaulting the hive tyrant: a tactic which was quite effective for us in the past. The squads on my flank eliminated the hormagaunt swarm even as they reached the river, leaving just the 3 hive warriors and hive tyrant on the walkway. The remainder of 1st squad fired at the genestealers on our right, and the Legion of the Damned advanced towards the Tyranids. I ordered 'No Interference' with their endeavors, as they seemed to be assisting us in our cause. Sgt. Malichus assaulted the hive tyrant after our heavy weapons had severely wounded it, but found that the monstrosity was surrounded by some sort of electromagnetic field, rendering his powerfist useless; subsequently the only weapon which could have affected the beast. I ordered Malichus to withdraw, but he switched off his comm unit and stood fast his ground, despite the fact that after the initial assault and the ensuing melee 8 of his brothers had fallen to the gigantic fiend. I made note of his valiant effort, then continued to concentrate on the rest of the battle at hand.
Our final barrage saw the 3 hive warriors destroyed, as well as seriously wounding the second hive tyrant. The 6 genestealers on our right were dispatched, and miraculously, Sgt. Malichus held the center of the line against the first hive tyrant, even managing to kill all but 4 of the termagants there. Our terminators finally teleported in, behind the second hive tyrant, assisting in its wounding. To my satisfaction, the remaining 7 Tyranids turned tail and ran, dragging the carcasses of their beastly abominations with them as they went. I dispatched the apothecary to see to our fallen brothers and the techmarine to see to the Bhaal Predator. Sgt. Malichus was still alive, as was his corporal, and they managed to stabilize their battle-brethren until the apothecary could heal them fully. We did not suffer a single fatality in this battle, and pressed on with our primary objective, entering the underhive through sewer openings within the facility itself. I remained behind with several marines to safeguard the vehicles whilst Capt. Duke led 1st squad, 2nd squad, Sgt. Malichus, 10th scout squad, and his loyal Terminator brethren into the sewers adsvkhsblkih... xxzfvbnzd... ujiozzzzzxxxxxx...

This Saturday, October 7th, a Warhammer event of epic proportions is being held at the Allentown branch of The Encounter. There will be prizes, comraderie, and lots and lots of killing, maiming, and gratuitous violence. The event will be held from 10am until 10pm, and both Jon & I have volunteered to assist in judging, as well as playing... To the victor go the spoils... ;>

Yes it is official. I started building my Warhammer army today with the purchase of a space marine assualt squad. I'm currently leaning towards the Blood Angels chapter.

Why does EVERYBODY get space marines? ;>

I had a dream last night that I was painting figures and assembling a warhammer army. In my dream I had been doing it for years and the figures were looking kinda cool.
Kinda weird since I have never even played warhammer, or warzone etc, nor have I even once painted any kind of figure.
What does it all mean?
-Houdini
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
It means you MUST go and buy figures and start painting an army!!! More people to play with, yes... YES!!! ;>

I had a dream that I was melting thousands of warhammer armies and making them into silverware. What does that mean? =P
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
It means you think plastic makes better silverware? ;>

Or that I like mutilating toys.
I used to decapitate my barbie dolls (hated those stupid things anyway) and hid them in patches of tall grass in my backyard so when mom came around with the lawnmower... Well, you get the idea =)

Are you sure you weren't born a boy and they just changed you later, Nat? ;>
By Subcriminal (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
I think I would have noticed, Fred =)
I mean if someone chopped your percy off you'd remember- right? Even if you aren't conscious for the experience, once you come to you it's painfully obvious (one would think).

Not to mention chicks do nothing for me. Hmmmm. That could mean I'm really a gay man trapped inside the body of a woman. Nah! Can't be, I don't like show tunes enough...

Go Orks! Yeah!
I'm playing some GorkaMorka with Uncle Bill this weekend. Better than Warhammer since EVERYBODY gets to be the Orks! Yeah!
Also assembled cool Wartrak, Fred! Sweet! I can comfortably field 1500 points these days, although I have plans to up that to 2000 soon...
I also played in Campaign Tyranids as featured in White Dwarf magazine. Had to fight Tanks though, and wasn't prepared, but I'll fix that for next time with the Zap-Gunz I'm building. And the Final Battle is SAT at Millenium Games - hopefully, I'll have the spare time to attend. !
Waaaaggghhh! D' Orks!

kewl.
I played in that campaign, too, and ended up fighting against blood angels with my marines... He ended up winning, but he only had 3 guys left at the end: his chaplain with a jump-pack, a scout with a heavy-bolter, and the Blood Angels dreadnought guy (the one with special rules and 2 powerfists). Jon and I worked together and created a new Duke model, you truly must see him in all his sunglass-wearin, stogie-smokin glory. Also, I put together my land raider crusader. It is a beautiful thing. My eventual goal is to complete a full-strength company with armor support (yes, 100 guys plus vehicles). That's a long way away, though... Other than that, haven't played in a while, and all my army is actually on display at the Encounter in a big glass case with the rest of Jose's stuff. Kewl. Duke lives in the "Hall of Heroes" with some other unique commanders who are painted really awesome-like. Anyway, bed-time. L8R!

I heard that you can order an entire Space Marines Company from GW - they give you a great deal. It is only like $8000 or something and you get like a billion guys. Don't remember details, but it is in White Dwarf. Good deal!
I need to paint the Ork WarTrak, but it has certainly earned some paint by putting paid to Uncle Bill's Wartrukk amongst the Dunes of GorkaMorka!

Yeah, I totally slaughtered Uncle Bill's Orks in Gorkamorka for the second game in a row! Ha ha - have enuff to buy another vehicle now, and I took down every last one of Uncle Bill's Orks without suffering ANY damage myself. Since all Uncle Bill's Orks suffered serious wounds (lost arms, brain damage, lost eyes, exploding gastanks) he is retiring his gang and starting over! oo yah
Hey, is WarMaster any good Fred? I remember U were planning to try it out!

got it, never played.
the demo was pretty good, tho.
I participated in the largest 40K game I have ever played 2 weeks ago... 20,000 points PER SIDE in a giant, tyranid vs imperial, 5-table MEGA BATTLE designed to be the final, climactic confrontation between the bugs and the imperium. I was the Imperial High Commander, and Jon was the Tyranid Hive Mind... we each had titans under our command, and I had a Baneblade and Shadowsword on my side, and several FULL COMPANIES of marines. fully 4 players had over 2000 points of Blood Angels EACH. Final result, Imperial Victory! 5028 points worth of victory, in fact. Jon's bio-titan was killed in the 2nd turn of combat... AWESOME! Hail to the Emperor! By His eternal vigilance we shall destroy ALL the enemies of Humankind! ;>

Crud! i played in Campaign Tyranid at the Local Gameshop. We pitted an Ork/Nid army (messed up) against - you guessed it - Space Marines!
I took my share down, but bit the big one in the end as Greg and I had our Orks drowned in Tank Shells.
It was 16,000 to a side, almost as big as yours, 16 players.

I guess this belongs in here, since it's a wargame:
I just got in from Jon's house, where we test-played (for the first time) Axis & Allies: Europe. I decided to splurge today and spend the 50 bucks for the game, and let me tell ya, if you are at all interested in A&A, GET THIS GAME. It rocks. It's basically the original game, only the focus is on the European theatre. Germany is the only Axis power, facing off against US, Russia, and Britain. There are 2 new units: destroyers (3/3; nullify sub 'sneak' attacks; allow planes to attack subs in same combat zone) and artillery (2/2; when attacking, allow equal number of infantry to attack at strength 2). If what I just said is gibberish, remind me to explain the A&A rules to ya one day. ;> Anyway, though the game is a bit pricey, you DO get 269 historically accurate playing miniatures (that's right, EACH army has its own unique units) and a really kewl board, which will be usable in conjunction with the newly released Axis & Allies: Pacific (which Jon has vowed to buy at his earliest convenience).
What does this mean? This means Axis & Allies just got a whole lot bigger, with more territories, more possible IPC's, new units, and the ability to join the smaller 'theatre' boards together for a MASSIVE, VERY ACCURATE, WWII strategy game. So, even though it IS a bit pricey, if you are an A&A enthusiast, and will have frequent opportunities to play, it is well worth the money... Good night. ;>
By Funk Sol Brother (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
That's pretty darn cool! I think Axis and Allies was a pretty fun game, played it 2 or 3 times...
Also heard that there is a new Lord of the Rings miniatures game being put out by big daddy GW. Complete with its own line of minis, it will no doubt mirror the final battle with Soren in Return of the King, or other Tolkein-esque battles.

Yes, I have heard of that. It'll be like warhammer fantasy, only it will be set in Middle Earth. All I know is that I want Gandalf...
