Thinking about going to see the new Simpsons movie. Should be pretty interesting, I think! I mean, Homer with his own pet pig. How can you beat that?

By Reality is but another illusion. (Houdini) on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 - 03:42 pm:

The simpsons movie rocked!

Spiderpig, Spiderpig,
Does whatever a spiderpig does
Can he swing from a web?
No he can't, he's a pig.
Look out!
Here comes the Spiderpig!

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 11:28 am:

Yeah, that rocked! I can't believe how Homer gets kind of dumber and dumber every time. But you know, I think Chief Wiggum is a close second. I mean, the man nearly shot off his own head while eating donuts off of the barrel of his (loaded) gun!

So I was able to see "300 with Houdini. Boy, did it rock! I love the stylized action - it was really phenominal. I loved the part at the start of the movie where the Spartan King just shoves the messenger from Persia backwards into a pit along with everyone else. That was just REALLY COOL!

By Houdini (Houdini) on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - 11:46 am:

yeah, 300 was way cool.

I liked the scene where the boy who was to become the spartan king goes out for his trials and has to face down a wolf. I like the parallels they draw from that later in the movie.

Also yeah, the Persian messenger scene was good too.
---

Messenger: Choose your next words carefully,
Leonidas. They may be your last as king.

King Leonidas: [to himself: thinking] "Earth and water"?
[Leonidas unsheathes and points his sword at the Messenger's throat]

Messenger: Madman! You're a madman!

King Leonidas: Earth and water? You'll find plenty of both down there.

Messenger: No man, Persian or Greek, no man threatens a messenger!

King Leonidas: You bring the crowns and heads of conquered kings to my city steps. You insult my queen. You threaten my people with slavery and death! Oh, I've chosen my words carefully, Persian. Perhaps you should have done the same!

Messenger: This is blasphemy! This is madness!

King Leonidas: Madness...? THIS... IS... SPARTA!
[Kicks the messenger down the well]

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - 11:59 am:

Oh yeah! I totally had that whole scene playing in my head while I read this post. FANTASTIC!

By Aileen Welch (Ewokie) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 02:20 pm:

That was my favorite part of the movie too!! Kicking the Persian down the well!!

I watch that scene over and over and over...

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 04:16 pm:

Hi Ewokie! Yay! How are you? Have you seen any other good movies lately? How R U doing lately?

This Writers Guild of America strike is a weird thing to witness. I saw images on the news this morning of big screen actors like Robin Williams down there on the picket line with em. Thats pretty cool.

Part of me totally understands why the writers are striking. They want a cut of the action and anyone who risks it all to do that line of work deserves a cut of the action in my view.

Still I got a bone to pick with hollywood in general. Truth is the entertainment industry generally has produced mostly raw suckage for a few years now. I for one am sick of it.

I want movies and tv shows that simply do not suck. All too often lately Hollywood produces nothing but raw suckage. Sure there are some diamonds in the rough, but the majority of the cr@p they call entertainment is just raw suckage pretending to be entertainment.

Here is what I'd like to see.

First I'm going to pick on movies.

First up remakes.

I'm sick of remakes!

King Kong was a great movie. The first time it was made.

How many "twist versions" of Romeo and Juliet do we need in our lifetime?

How many campy comedy remakes of classic tv series do we need? And why do they always have to suck so bad?

More to come.. back to work for now.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, November 09, 2007 - 02:34 pm:

Houdini,

You are SO RIGHT. I mean, seriously, why shall it be so that so many movies have to be just plain bad? I will admit, I have only been excited about a handful of movies in the past few years. I am not interested in movies based on TV shows (although Serenity was a good movie). Other than that, who needs it?

Originality is a risk, but so worthwhile. I like seeing Indy movies for this reason.

Now I won't say all Hollywood movies are bad - many are really well thought-out and creative. Yet it does seem that many movies are just a rehash of something Hollywood believes people will LOVE. Hollywood does not take a lot of risks. If it isn't based on a popular video game / TV Show / movie, new movies don't often get made.

And that's why I think we should all go see Lars and the Real Girl. Unknown Actors. New Concepts. Not based on a book.

Keepin' it real, folks.

Saw AVP 2 last night with Jon and it was very cool. I personally liked it alot better than the first one. Reasons being that it had alot more of the frantic feel of the the main movies, and to be honest it had a bit more believability to it. Two thumbs up from me, will defenitly pick this up on DVD.

By Sol Hawk (Sol) on Friday, December 28, 2007 - 09:59 am:

Sounds pretty cool. I saw an ad for another movie I want to go see: "Meet the Spartans." This seems as if it will be the funny hit of the season!

Saw the preview for that last night, it's pretty much this years Epic Movie.

I'm looking forward to seeing 21. I saw the Discovery channel special on the actual MIT team that beat the vegas odds and won big at blackjack just by learning to do simple math! It was all legal too but the man doesn't like it when you use system to game the system. It looks the movie adaptation of their story should be pretty good. Although Kevin Spacey is playing the professor sans glasses and I think if your going to portray a MIT professor who wore glasses in real life, then dammit your character portrayal of him better wear glasses too!

What do youse all think?

--Houdini, not too bad at playing cards himself, except blackjack which I actually suck at.

But take me on in pitch, auction pinnacle, poker, or hearts and yer mine baby!

(I never really got into gin, rummy, spades or euchre much).

In case you haven't seen it - lots of info here on Lucas and the 20 Star Wars projects he's done (including some I've never heard of).

Reviewer to George Lucas: Stop Ruining Star Wars!
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/2008/08/15/2008-08-15_dear_george_lucas_stop_ruining_star_wars.html

When I read this article I said to myself, "self, this guy is right".

This critique is a long time coming. Kid gloves are now off. The lucas apologists will not know what hit em.

I allways thought the clone wars were about clones attacking/threatning the republic. Instead it was clones nobody cared about fighting droids nobody cared about with Jedi fighting alongside the clones nobody cared about.

Yawn.

Gee, where is the human suffering in that storyline? At least with Rebels vs Imperials you get the idea that its people fighting a war with an outcome that mattered. "Gee Bryan thats the point the war was a ruse by Palaptine, a red hearing to get power." Yeah I know, but that hardly makes it anymore entertaining.

The original trillogy story was compelling because it was real people impacted by real warfare that took real lives. I'll grant you that Lucas did a less then sympathetic potrayal of the Stormtroopers. He doesn't let you feel sorry for them even though they are just regular people caught up in something just as much as the rebel forces are. I'm sure many mothers cried for the loss of their sons when the death star blew. The point is, the mental impact of those deaths still mattered if you cared to find that truth.

Contrast to the prequels:

Clones nobody gives a darn about versus droids nobody gives a darn about. Yawn.

Why would a jedi want to fight some "damm fool idealistic crusade" when nobody was really sending their sons and daughters off to war?

How well trained could Darth Vader have been if his entire Jedi career prior to his turning was spent turning droids into scrap metal? Then we have him killing younglings and some inept trade federation dolts who deserved it. Other then the Obiwan vs Anakin battle, thanks to the trilogy Vader looks less battle tested and formidable then his son Luke who actually had to fight real opponents in real battles.

Prior to the prequels Vader comes off as a badass because Obiwan tells Luke that Vader hunted down and destroyed all the Jedi. So you are thinking "whoa Vader/Anakin slayed experienced Jedi? What a badass! Man is he evil and powerfull."

What does Lucas the dumbass do? He goes the godfather on us and has the clone troops turn on the jedi and take them all out. So in other words, the only Jedi Vader takes out on screen are some kids. Evil yes, but scary powerfull?

Not really.

I was expecting to see Vader/Anakin beat Mace Windu in a duel.

Order of events *should* have been:

1. Anakin is turning because of his lust for absolute power. He on the verge of turning fully but is still on the fence. Sends Jedi order a radio message to them that he doesn't need them anymore and is going to train with his new master because only the sith can make him powerfull enough to save his wife from certain death. Palapatine tells him to go to the lava planet to await futher instuctions. On a hunch has a thrid party messanger send a message to Obi-wan so that he will follow. Is convinced a hostile encounter with Obi-wan will turn the boy fully.

2. Obi-wan finds Anakin on the lava planet and trys to talk some sense into the boy. The boy being stuborn duels obi-wan. Awesome dueling sequence occurs. Anakin gets f'cked up in the process.

3. Obi-wan leaves Anakin for dead. Being abandoned by his old master and his new master saving him and patching him up solidfies his loyalty to the sith. He's now convinced the Jedi are complete aholes.

4. He goes to find his beloved only to discover he looks like well, darth vader, and leaves him.

5. Very shortly later she goes into labor. Has the kids. Palpatine keeps this information from him and tells Anakin that she is dead.

6. Vader goes full bad ass and begins the purge.

7. Yoda and Obi-wan go into hiding and hide Luke. A year later Amadala dies and Leia gets herself upgraded to princess leigh. Why? Because how else can Leia remember her mother when Luke asks about her in return of the jedi?

The end.

By I, (Ranger) on Saturday, August 16, 2008 - 12:06 pm:

In the REAL world, we ask Midi-chlorians? WTF are midi-chlorians?!?

Padme does NOT 'lose the will to live' and what would a droid know of that in the first place? Anakin crushes 3 or 4 vertebrae and she's crippled dying slowly over the next year or two, knowing it's really a miracle she lived long enough to give birth.

Anakin doesn't kill younglings. The whole point here is that Vader is redeemable--there is no redeeming the MURDER of CHILDREN.

During order 66, several THOUSAND clone troopers are killed as the Jedi ACTUALLY PUT UP A FIGHT to defend themselves from the turncoat clones.

The Phantom Menace doesn't exist. Instead, Attack of the Clones is Episode 1, The Clone Wars animated series is Episode 2, and Revenge of the Sith is Episode 3.

C3PO was a protocal droid Anikin SALVAGED, not contructed by him. What possible reason would a slave have for building such a thing?

The end of ep 3 was so Frakenstien's monster. He's even restrained. I'm just surprised they didn't bring down the lightning for that last bit. And would Darth Vader scream NOOOO! Absolutley not! Anakin might but not the Dark Lord of the Sith dammit! Needs an immediate rewrite.

Oh, and Greedo does NOT shoot first, or at all, for that matter.

Lucas should not be allowed at a word processor. Ideas, editing, producing - these he can do. Writing and directing should be left to those who can do it. And it isn't HIM!

Totally agree here as Leia is supposed to have some memories about her being "Beautiful, kind, but sad." How the 'ell is she supposed to have those memories if her mother died 30 seconds after giving birth to her.

Don't get me started on the whole Greedo shot first thing.

Did Ranger really just use WTF in a sentence!?

By Warsmith (Knight_Hawk) on Saturday, August 16, 2008 - 12:23 pm:

Oops just relized I duplicated Bryan's question about Leia's memories of Padme. So yeah I agree with Bryan there too.
