GalaxyQuest rocked.
I put a deposit down on the widescreen edition of Episode 1 about two weeks ago.

I'm so bad.

Cool! Why is that so bad? Collecting sci-fi videos is in your blood!

By Funk Sol Brother (Sol) on Unrecorded Date:

Yeah! Sci-Fi must be preserved at all cost if we are to build the foundation for our tech-rich future. I want my flying car, da*nit!

I saw "Mission To Mars" on Saturday.

You know, for a movie with great special effects and an all-star cast the writing was well, how do I say this kindly? The cold hard truth was that the script was predictable and uninspired. That being said, it was entertaining, in a comfortably predictable sort of way.

"Missio to Mars" is in short, a dollar theatre movie.

My .02 cents.

Hey, did anyone here anything about this yet?

A live action movie version of Tomb Raider is currently in pre-production. Aprox. scheduled release date: Spring 2001.

Cool.

The 12 members who sit on the Jedi Council in episode one are as follows:

Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson)
Yoda (duh)
Ki-Adi-Mundi (elongated head, white top-knot & manchu-looking goattee)
Even Piell (pink guy with the scarred eye & floppy ears)
Depa Billaba (hindu-looking lady)
Yarael Poof (long-neck, matchstick-head guy)
Eeth Koth (black guy with the crown-looking bunch o'horn-thingies around his head)
Saesee Tiin (demon-looking guy with the downward-pointing, purple, horn-looking things)
Oppo Rancisis (white, hairy, wookiee-looking guy)
Plo Koon (big orange guy with the black breathing mask thingy)
Adi Gallia (beautiful black woman with the tentacle-thingies for hair)
Yaddle (477 year-old female version of Yoda; head of Library Assembly)

Just some more useless knowledge from me... ;>

Hmm... it will be interesting to see what changes they make to episode II. I don't think they got the overall review they wanted got episode I. I liked it, but I would hardly call it a classic. Maybe part of it was, it was too modern. Movies that want to stay classic, shouldn't use modern expressions (ie ex-squeeze me!)

I have one request of episode II. I want to see Jar Jar die!!!! :)

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date:

George Lucas has already slated Jar-Jar for both episode 2 & 3 already. I think he's gonna try and make him into a chewbacca-esque figure, only instead of kick-ass cool, he's nauseatingly stupid in his attempts to be cutesy-funny. Didn't you notice how Lucas extended the "life-debt" honor-concept to the Gungans, who don't seem to have much honor to begin with? If an army of Wookies was hangin out, trying to fight an army of droids, I doubt the wookies would turn tail and run when their precious shield generator failed... Just my humble, near-official opinion. ;>

By supertease =9 (Lox) on Unrecorded Date:

Man.... that sucks! :( It's questionable whether I will be able to sit through the movies then. I have this violent hatred towards Jar Jar.. It's the weirdest thing! I cringe through all the scenes with him now.

Ah well.. hopefully he'll change his character a little (well, alot!) (I agree about the turning tail and running thing)

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date:

So, apparently SW Insider magazine embellished upon the truth slightly, when I read that Ewan McGregor had spent time with Sir Alec Guinness while studying for Obi-Wan. I just read an interview on the SW page where Ewan told the interviewer he hadn't spent any time with Sir Alec, he just watched all of his old movies over and over and over again, studying voice, mannerisms, and everything. Oh, well... Sorry for perpetuating a myth. I thought it was official, coming from SW Insider. I was wrong... L8R.

By Funk Sol Brother (Sol) on Unrecorded Date:

re Jar Jar: The way I understand it, SW I, II, and III are basically Jar Jar's coming of age story. You know, in episode I he is young and brash, unpolished youth. In II he trains to be a Jedi, becoming double-powerful and falling in love with Amidala - it is a beautiful love story AND an adventure! In episode III the circle is complete and Jar Jar is a real jedi at last, saving Obi-Wan's life on the edge of the volcano and kicking Vader's arse, thus at last fulfilling his life-debt to Qui-Gon.

According to Lucas, the "bit characters" (Yoda, Anikan, Obi-Wan, Mace) will fade into the background significantly more in episode II leaving more room for character development between Jar Jar and Amidala. Anikan will also see much less screen time - this will make his character much more mysterious, leaving most of his development for IV, V, and VI.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date:

I also enjoyed it. They changed some very minor things about the story concerning Rogue and Wolverine, but sometimes little changes need to be made when transposing something from comic to movie. Patrick Stewart did an awesome job as Xavier, and Ian McKellum did really good as Magneto, but I personally think the entire movie was stolen by the performance of that new guy who plays Wolverine. Perfect portrayal, I think--and I'm a HUGE Wolverine fan. Not much development anywhere else tho, really. They didn't really go into Storm or Cyclops or Jean Grey in very much detail--you kinda had to be a comic fan to even know how they should be acting--but the actors did do a good job all around. Fred's high-points:

:Introduction of Wolverine. Says it all about his character.
:Truck accident/fight with Sabertooth.
:Xavier/Magneto face-off with police in front of train station. VERY kewl.
:Mystique/Wolverine fight in base of Statue of Liberty.
:Sabertooth/Wolverine fight ON Statue of Liberty.

These were my personal favorite scenes; if you've seen the movie, then you'll probably agree with me. Also, I liked the interaction between Wolverine and Cyclops throughout the movie. The kids did their homework. L8R!

By Margravine (Ranger) on Unrecorded Date:

Gee whiz, guys. The only first run movie I've seen or am likely to see any time soon was ....Chicken Run.

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date:

So, apparently Watto will be making a return appearance, as well as Shmi Skywalker (yes, I'm talking about Star Wars again). Ki-Adi-Mundi will have a more prominent role, and so will Yoda and Mace Windu. Stunt coordinator Nick Gillard said that Mace Windu's fighting prowess is second only to Yoda's, adding "if he gets close to you--you're dead." I can't wait to see THAT. Also, Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor will definately be doing all their own stunts. On a side note, for all you LA Law and NYPD Blue fans: Jimmy Smits has been cast to play Bail Organa of Alderaan--you know, Leia's adoptive daddy who dies when the Death Star blows up the planet? He should do really well. It has also been hinted at that we will get to see Yoda fight, but everything is being kept a big secret. Apparently, their are alot of bounty hunter roles being cast right now, so I'm assuming the main bad guys will be bounty hunters? Just a shot in the dark. Episode 2 also has a co-screenwriter, so hopefully the story won't suck as bad as 1. There's supposed to be alot of political intricacy happening, as well as a complex love story, so hopefully there'll be room for some LIGHTSABER DUELING. I have spoken. ;>

I went to Scifi.com and proved my theory correct. What theory you may ask. Well after watching the Road Warrior and realized that the warrior woman that buys it at the end on the rig now plays Zan on Farscape. And she does Road Warrior was her Debut.

I also found out that Leonardo Decrapio's film debute was Critters 3. Just another reason added to my list of why I dislike the guy.

I like the show, the crew is pretty good and all that(Need a few more eps to get a good idea.) My biggest problem is with the ship, while the show takes place a mere 100 years from first contact the ship looks more like an Akira class ship from the Next Gen. era. I do like the new theme music though.

Speaking of Next Gen. I have been watching it when I can on TNN. I got cable the Wed. after it aired on TNN and watched the five day marathon.

Knight Hawk,

According to History (I think) the Feds' first contact with the Klingons sparked a war - but the end of episode 1 seemed to show a peaceful 1st encounter. Also, how did the Feds (suspicious offworlders) get into the Great Hall so easily? My question!

I like the crew so far, too, the vulcan woman seems very crass and critical - even Spock had some charm. It will be a challenge to develop her character into someone the viewers can like as a person.

Sol

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, October 19, 2001 - 10:53 am:

Possibly, I picked up my copy of SW:ep1 on tuesday and watched the deleted scenes. Very cool they even put some of the scenes into the finished movie. Sadly none of the scenes were from the lightsaber duel, they mostly had to do with the podrace and the events on Tatooine. Another cool addition was the "Duel of the Fates" music video. If you haven't seen it, it is very cool.

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Friday, November 16, 2001 - 11:17 am:

I have a question for all the tech "geeks" among us(I'm one too but I need help). Theoretically how fast do you think a ship could travel in space with six engines the size of three aircraft carriers when powered by a fision reactor?

Yes this is not at rick question I am looking for an answer. Since space offers no resistance and weight is not a factor how I'd almost venture that speed is not limited beyond safety.

Another question, for getting up to speeds equal to or greater than light. Would you use a magnetic coil gate, or the slingshot method using the gravety of a planet, star, or blackhole?

All answer will be appreiciated.

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Friday, November 16, 2001 - 12:19 pm:

I can't help much, but I can say this much:
Don't get fission reactors, they are dumb. Go fusion! In addition, since some reactors are more efficient than others, the size needed will be dependent on the exact technology used.

As for FTL travel in general: modern physics says that it is impossible to go faster than the speed of light. Coming very VERY close is possible, but as you approach the speed of light, the amount of mass your ship has also increases exponentially, to the point where you need more and more energy to push it. It would take infinite energy to reach the speed of light (impossible).

How to generate enough energy to even approach light speed is the question. Star Trek uses matter-antimatter reactions - a pint of matter combined with a pint of antimatter would release enough energy to create a crater miles wide.

It would take a huge amount of power to even reach 1/10th light speed... and since all the stars are SO far apart from each other, this kind of travel would not be fast by any means, even at light speed. (Nearest star is 4 light years away).

That's why some sci fi like Star Wars uses shortcuts like hyperspace to cross the distance faster.

Sol

By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Friday, November 16, 2001 - 12:28 pm:

umm... okay, here's my stab in the dark for this...

Nuclear fission is our current means of nuclear power. It is by far not the most efficient harnessing of atomic power, and it tends to be bulky and frequently has dangers of meltdown and random radiation leaks. Fusion is much more efficient, smaller, and has less chance of irradiating side-effects.

OK, the 6-engines thing. Nuclear fission requires material to react. Depending on how much 'fuel' you want these engines to have would determine size, shielding, power regulation, etc. Usually, FTL travel requires enormous expenditures of energy to "break the threshold" of lightspeed. This is why trekkies use the matter-antimatter reactor core. matter-antimatter explosions yield extraordinarily high levels of energy to be exploited. but, fission does not, so you run into limited material for FTL "jumps" (think original star trek series and Dilithium crystals).

it is theoretically possible to create magnetic fields strong enough to propel an object to lightspeed. Again, a great deal of power in unison with superconductors would need to be used, and the magnetic field generator would need to be a separate object (think of a kinetic rail gun firing the starship out like a giant bullet).

One of the hindrances of sci-fi FTL travel is Einstein's theory of relativity. find a way around it, and you can make anything work. I was gonna say something about 6 engines... The thing realspace drives do is add maneuverability and acceleration to a vessel. more force output per ton of mass yields quicker response and acceleration. Top speed is limited by actual real-world physics. you can literally go fast enough to crush a vehicle if you are not careful. also, a major consideration is G-force. when you accelerate, G-forces are inevitably created. you don't want to accelerate faster than a human body can sustain, pressure-wise, or all your passengers will be so much red goop all lumped in the back of the ship.

6 engines the size of aircraft carriers. are we talkin like, Battlestar-type ships? Like, Star Destroyers? Big mommas, right? You thinkin of mounting weapons on this bad boy? That drains power off the primary reactors, too, unless you have secondary power supplies and redundant systems going on... Anyway, hope I helped just a little. What's this for, anyway? Science fair project? :)

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Saturday, November 17, 2001 - 12:15 am:

Ok here's why I'm askin'. I came up with an idea for a story that is set 20 years from now using todays technology to get us around in space.

As for the power I was thinking Fusion not Fision(I always confuse them). The megnetic acceleration things I was talking about were a seperate part that hurled the Starship.

Yes it is large, I was thinking 6 aircraft carriers in length and about as wide as one. I was going to arm it but not with lasers as this is today not possible. instead it would be armed with "Magnetic Accelerators", or as Fred mentioned 'Rail Guns'. As well as Torpedoes that use rocket fuel to power them(fire and forget at great expence).

This is most of what I have so far and I am still working out the details, any suggestions might prove useful.

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 - 08:46 am:

Knight Hawk, did you do some work on your novel? If yes, I'd love to read an excerpt or two!

I have Sci Fi channel now, so I can watch Bab 5! Is it better than Star Trek? Or just a lot of fancy special effects?

Another Q - Are good special effects enough to make a sci fi worth watching, or is more needed? If more is needed, then what else?

Sol

By Vengence is Mine (Knight_Hawk) on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 - 11:31 pm:

More is needed. Not only do you need the SFX but you also need a story that is believable, a character that everyone can relate to in some way.

AND YOU NEED A STACKED CHICK IN A SUPER TIGHT SINGLE PEICE OH MY GOD ARE THEY REAL CAT SUIT.

Uh-pay no attention to the man behind the my brain. No seriously it takes more then cool ships and big explosions to make a good Sci-Fi show. Best example I can give is Farscape, Babylon 5, Star Trek (any), and Battlestar Galactica. (Ok ok so that's more than one)

By Technomage (Houdini) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 03:23 pm:

Sol. Babylon 5 is worth your time to watch if you like space-based science fiction stories which I know you do.

Here is a short list why Babylon 5 is a great show:

1. Great writing. The characters develop and evolve over time, and story arcs are appearent across episodes, seasons, and the entire series.
Even so, you can watch a single episode and enjoy it no matter where you are in the 5 seasons it ran.

Also, writers make sure you actually care about the main characters. The main characters are not always so cut and dry as "hero or villan". The view is much more complicated and intresting.

2. Great acting. All the actors sell very convincing performances.

3. The drama and plot of the Babylon 5 story share an equal stake with the action sequences.

The action serves to further the plot, but does not replace or upstage it.

4. What prime directive? =)

5. Darren loves the show and he is a tough critic as anybody I know. If the show stunk he certainly wouldn't have bothered to record ALL of the episodes. I would too if I owned a decent VCR.

By Yo' Daddy (Sol) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 08:20 am:

That is very true! Additionally, I have one of Darren's tapes, too, that I need to watch and return.

Now that I have Cable, I may be able to catch one or two more episodes of Bab5.

By Margravine (Ranger) on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 05:53 pm:

B5 Also provides not one but two strong characters who specialize in one liners - Garibaldi and Ivanova - there are whole sites dedicated to quotes from B5, in fact I think I posted a couple over in the notables section myself...

By Margravine (Ranger) on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 05:55 pm:

By the way, writing is paramount not only to good scifi but any genre. If you have good enough writing you could conceivebley have a thrilling story that never leaves one room while conversely a lot of flash bang is just that without a good story to back it up.

By Technomage (Houdini) on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 10:18 am:

Yes, the pilot was a two night mini-series that was released last year in December 2003.

Tonight is the first episode of the actual tv series itself. It's weird that scifi waited over a year between the series pilot and the actual show, but
then again a network that brings us crap like the lame show scare tactics doesn't allways make sense.
