So anyway, Me 'n' Jeff got to see The Toxic Avenger Director's Cut! Woah! It is about this kid named Melvin from Tromaville who is a REAL dweeb. One day, he's had too much, and after a mean prank at his expense, and tormented by all his peers, he jumps out a 2nd story window. Little does Melvin know that there is a truck of Toxic Waste right outside, and he plunges head-first into the radioactive waste, becoming the TOXIC AVENGER, dedicated to just 1 thing: destroying evil!
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Is that the movie where, near the end, the guy falls into a toxic puddle, staggers onto the street, then a car hits him, causing his now-molecularly weakened form to splatter ten yards down the pavement? Or is it the one where the really deformed 'hero' puts some guy's head under a milkshake-maker and goes to work? I forget...
By Tony (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
The latter! The first one you are thinking of may well be Robocop. Which I also loved! I love most movies that have something to do with Cyborgs - the intermediary point between computer and machine is of special interest to me.
I think the cool thing about Toxie is that he always uses his mop to clean up afterwards!

When Emperor Palpatine ordered his purge of the Jedi,
Yoda went into hiding on Dagobah. He uses the Force and
the planet's own natural defenses to discourage visitors. But
he has kept watch on Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.
After escaping almost certain death from a wampa ice
creature on Hoth, Luke sees Ben Kenobi in a vision, telling
him to go to the Dagobah system to continue his Jedi
training with Yoda.
I can't remember who I was having this discussion with - we were trying to decide if Dagobah was Yoda's home planet or if he was hiding from the Empire. This little snippet from the Home Page of LucasArts seems to answer the question nicely,
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Dagobah isn't Yoda's home planet. He went into hiding there during the purge, and a dark Jedi hunter actually found him. They had an epic duel, with Yoda finally defeating the villain in a certain 'special' location--the Dark Force cave where Luke has his vision of Vader. The dark side of the force at that place is so strong that Yoda moved right next to it, and his light side signature actually neutralizied the force emanations coming from the cave. Also, Dagobah is teeming with life, adding much-needed force interference to the mixture, and voila! Instant hide-out for a Jedi Master...
By Tony (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Woah! That's so cool! What novel tells about the epic battle? Is the Dark Cave EVIL because Yoda squashed the Dark Jedi there? Did Yoda squash the Dark Jedi? Or what happened to him?

Yoda will be MUCH younger in the new movie. I heard that toward the middle of the movie, they actually show Yoda go into a deep meditation - he actually time travels forward to consult with his older self as well as a YOUNGER Yoda from when Yoda was just a Jedi Knight under the tutelage of Master Bodo. Yoda was actually, like, 6 feet tall with a lot of muscles when he was young, and since they hadn't invented Light Sabres yet, he had a long stick instead. Actually, no, more like a broom handle, real smooth-like. Anyway, all 3 Yodas agree that Anikan has the seed of Evil in him, and NOT to admit him to Jedi Training (as shown in the newest trailer). This movie will be so cool! I can't wait!
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Light Sabres were invented long before Yoda was born. He's only 900 years old. The Jedi are thousands of Millenia old. My example is from the comic series Tales of the Jedi, which takes place mebbe 4,000 years before the clone wars. It takes place during the second Sith War. You got characters like Nomi Surider, Ulic Qel-Droma and his brother, Cay, and one of the first Dark Lords of the Sith... Damn... I forget his name... BUT, he's the very first jedi to use the light-staff, an ancient Sith technology deemed evil by the masters... So, don't tell me that lightsabers weren't invented yet... Not all Jedi used them, tho, so Yoda may have been one of these. L8R!
By Tony (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Maybe Yoda's planet had a slow economy and couldn't afford them?
By Tony (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
In a Disney Kids magazine they had an article about Darth Vader vs. Yoda... who would win? The article ultimately concluded that Yoda would, because Good Force always beats bad foce, and after all, if Yoda taught Luke a FRACTION of what he knew, and Luke beat Darth, that MUST make Yoda the greatest Jedi ever. Who do you think would win? (Good Poll question, hint hint)
By Bryan (Houdini) on Unrecorded Date: |
Sure Sol, check out the new poll. :)
Ok, so Star Wars: Episode I opens in theatres this Wednesday. Who is going to see it this weekend?
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
I'm going on thursday night. By the way, Yoda is not the greatest jedi ever. You can find others if you look in the Tales of the Jedi books and other Dark Horse comics. One of my favorites is Arca Jeth, the all-time greatest lightsaber instructor in the history of the Jedi. He was ultimately killed in a battle with assassin droids, which he couldn't sense through the Force. It was this single event that caused Ulic Cel-Droma to try to infiltrate the Dark Side to defeat it from within. He was eventually seduced and began fighting against his former friends, and with his lightsaber skills (taught to him by Arca Jeth) he royally whooped up on most of them. Also, the other Jedi I forgot earlier was Exar Kun. Ulic and Exar were joint Dark Lords of Sith, and would often get in little tiffs and duel each other. Exar used a light-staff and Ulic used a single saber, and usually Ulic would gain a narrow victory. Testament to the ultimate skill of Arca Jeth. I have spoken...
By Margravine Issold (Ranger) on Unrecorded Date: |
Wasn't Nomi Sunrider a natural with the light sabre but refused to train with it. She and Cray (?) Cel - Droma eventually had to take down Ulic didn't they? I believe he was the one she cut out of the force entirely.

I've never read any of the star wars novels. I thought I'd like to. So I went to amazon.com and did a search. 250 different paperback titles!
Oufie!
I'm interested in what happens after RTOJ, and
I'm interested in the history of the Sith.
Can you folks recomend some good titles?
-Houdini
By Margravine (Ranger) on Unrecorded Date: |
The Zahn trilogy, for sure. I liked 'Children of the Jedi' by Hambly, too. Be careful SW novels are like a mine field, never know when you'll find the dud.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Truce at Bakura takes place right after Endor. Courtship of Princess Leia takes place right after that. Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy is AWESOME, and takes place five years later...
No novels really cover the Sith in great detail, but I can recommend comics. Tales of the Jedi has three cycles you can read: Knights of the Old Republic; Dark Lords of the Sith; and War of the Sith. Another DH comic just came out, which takes place 5000 years before SW4. It's called Golden Age of the Sith. I think there's another one out there that takes place like 40,000 years ago, but I'm not sure. That one allegedly details the rise of the Sith. Hope I helped ya, Bry!
----PS: DO NOT READ THE JEDI SEARCH TRILOGY. I READ THE FIRST ONE AND NEARLY VOMITED MY BRAIN OUT, SINCE IT HAD MELTED AND LEAKED INTO MY STOMACH. BAD, BAD, BAD!
By Margravine (Ranger) on Unrecorded Date: |
I did not want DeForest Kelly's passing to go by with out comment. The quintesential carmudgeon, forever Dr. Leonard McCoy in the public mind. Perhaps the most telling thing about him, however, was that he stayed married to the same woman for 55 years. Whatever other Trekker laudettes are due him, that really says something.

When does the new season of Futurama start? For that matter what day of the week is it on? Messa confused.
-Bryan
By - (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Bry, Futurama has already started. The first one of Season 2 was called "Didanic" and everyone went on a space-cruise on a ship destined to sink. I don't know what night it was, but there's a new one soon! Was it Sunday? Know anything, Greyfox, and did you record it?
By Bryan (Houdini) on Unrecorded Date: |
Anyone ever see a show called Farscape? It is on the sci-fi channel on Friday nights. I've only seen a few episodes so far, but it looks pretty good. It's kinda like Buck Rodgers only alot cooler. The alien races on the show are really well done.
Also, has anyone gotten the chance to see the 2-hour ST: Voyager premiere yet? If anyone has it on tape, let me know.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Hrrumph, snore, drool. What? There's a thing called TV? What is this mystical cube of lit-up moving pictures of which you speak? Tell ME! ;>
By - (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Well, it shoots images and pictures thru the air... you know, by using radiation. This radiation is all-permeating - it can come through the walls of your house, and it isn't dangerous because the wavelengths are very long. And viola! We can see news or plays or stories or cartoons - right on this electronic device, this tele - vision... tele for far and vision for something you can see... get it? Far-seeing story box... television!

By Margravine (Ranger) on Unrecorded Date: |
I've been watching Farscape from about week two, Bryan. It is pretty cool. Rockne O'Banion had a hand in its creation. He's been around forever, I think since the original Twilight Zone. He's old fashioned sci-fi with a sense of humor.
Futurama I believe is gonna be on Sundays.
By - (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
UPN will soon be having a new show on FRI nights which has as the main character a computer- generated woman. It looks cool, I don't know anything about it. Speaking of UPN, I saw Shasta McNasty yesterday afternoon - they had "mini-me" from Austin Powers as a psychotic midget bouncer. It was cool - I hope he doesn't get type-cast, though.
By Rigel (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
Farscape is cool. Brian Henson and the Jim Henson Creature Shop are also part of the production team. I've seen a whole bunch of episodes, and I even got my roommates hooked. It seems that the sci-fi channel is the only thing that makes paying for cable worthwhile.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
What about the History Channel, the Learning Channel, Cartoon Network, and A&E? Man, you really are choosy, Nat... J
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
I saw a great special on the Discovery channel about the missing-link between Dinosaurs and Birds (discovered in China). We also found out how the peacock got his name.
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
I also found out that FOX rochester airs Futurama on Sunday.
By Rigel (Nat) on Unrecorded Date: |
I'll give you the cartoon network (Bubbles!), but I find the history channel WAY too ethnocentric and depressing for my taste.TLC is ok, but I've already seen most of the stuff they broadcast, so its like watching re-runs.
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Is MTV worth mentioning anymore?
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Of course the History Channel is ethnocentric and depressing--HISTORY WAS ETHNOCENTRIC AND DEPRESSING! They're just showing it like it was.
No, actually, I don't think MTV is worth mentioning anymore...

The Matrix World
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
I thoroughly enjoyed the Star Trek Voyager last night which delved into the fantasy life of a hologram. I find it amazing that Star Fleet has come such a long way since Data. I mean, NO ONE could make a Soong android, but a holographic (sentient) Doctor came about just by leaving him ON all the time. He seems much more human than Data... Data is rough, like a sketch compared to the completeness of the Doctor. I mean, he's as real as it gets! His "shortcomings" as a human are extremely subtle... while Data can't even use contractions, and whines ALL THE TIME about how he's not human. Wot-up wit' dat?
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Now that I think about it, Vic Fontain and even some holograms in Next Generation gained self-awareness, too. Minuet, all those guys in The Big Goodbye, Moriarti, TONS of them. But somehow, no one knows how to put that into an android body??? That's confusing. How is it that the Federation doesn't just start cranking out the holograms? Imagine the possibilities.
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yes, but then Starfleet would have to acknowledge holograms as another sentient species, and suddenly, they fall under the prime directive, which makes them completely untouchable by Starfleet, anyway. See? ;>
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Oh, yah, that's true - good point!
By Damien Ertle (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
True but then again Starfleet could then build battle groups of ships populated with holograms and send them off to fight the borg, Dominion etc. with minimal loss of life. True the resources would be lost but the ship doesn't have to have all the luxeries of the ships populated by living beings. It could save them all the trouble of training new crews everytime a ship is lost. Think of what could of happened if Voyeger had been such a ship, no loss there and no hubub about a life spanning trip back home.
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Also, a hologram would get back to the Alpha quadrant faster - just beam the program home via sub-space!
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Why not just go all the way and produce holographic ships, too... Just think of it--set the parameters of the program to allow any sort of energy to pass through it, and voila! Phasers, Torpedoes, Tachyon pulses--everything would just pass through it! And all you would need is a self-propelled, holo-emitter as the core... Hmm....
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Well, let's see - a holo-emitter and a computer to store the data... I don't know, plus a power-source... the question is, how big would the holo-emitter have to be in relation to the hologram it emits?
By Damien Ertle (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
Not that big I mean look at the device the doctor wears. True it's from their future but still. Only one problem with the teory Greyfox, holographic ships still only do holographic damage. Now if they built the ships to be one big holodeck (note: as in Insurection.) the ship could just be a hull with phaser banks and torpedo bays.
By Damien Ertle (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
And just to add my little bit to the earlier cable discussion. Farscape is great, I started watching it from the begining and have pretty much seen every episode. I do agree with Fred MTV is in no way shape or form worth mentioning.
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Damien, "holographic damage," maybe, but remember that the Doctor in Star Trek can "go solid" if he wants!
I mentioned also that we needed a computer and powersource, but now that I think about it, there is no real reason that they themselves could not also be holographic. If you worked it right, you could probably even have a holographic holo-emitter... the first thing it would be programmed to emit, of course, would be its own power-source. Once we had a good holographic matter-antimater reaction going, there'd be plenty of power to emit weapons, a computer, and a complete holographic crew. If we ran into a power problem, we'd just emit a second power-source.
By Damien Ertle (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
True but if you run into a energy dampening field the deals off. Ship lost forever. With a holodeck ship you could recapture the hull and bring the holoprogram back online.
By Solenoid (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Hmmm, that's true, didn't think of that... but what if we had, like, a little holo-scout that could fly ahead of the main ship, and we'd have a pre-warning if it vanished, there? Still cheaper than building a physical ship!
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Alexander "Lex" Luthor was one of the most powerful humans on Earth,
but Lex derived his power from money and influence rather than super powers.
At age thirteen, he arranged for his parents' death to gain the life-
insurance money, and it was not long before he took over his first company.
From there, he used his intellect to rise to ownership of many other
companies and found LexCorp International. Despite his selfish motives, Lex
maintained the facade of being a philanthropist, and most people in
Metropolis loved him for the many gifts and jobs he provided for the city.
His intelligence led him to such a prominent position, and it allowed it to
make the most of his power. Lex Luthor was clearly the richest man in
Metropolis, and his scheming made him the most powerful--before Superman
arrived. Lex was jealous of Superman's power and became his enemy when he
was unable to buy the Man of Steel. Superman saw through Lex's deceit, but
after several encounters, Lex was able to keep Superman at bay when he had a
ring fashioned from a chunk of Kryptonite (see Q34) he obtained.
Ironically, this same Kryptonite eventually led to loss of his hand and
induced cancer. Shortly before his inevitable death, Lex Luthor died in a
plane crash.
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
A pocket universe with a duplicate Earth was attacked by three supervillains
from that universe's Krypton. That universe, however, had no Superman nor
other superheroes because its sole protector--Superboy (see Q27)--had died
years ago. The Lex Luthor of that universe was a good-natured heroic
genius, however, and he not only led the resistance forces but also
developed a special weapon. Lex Luthor invented a substance called
protomatter and used it to fashion an artificial life-form (known as Matrix
or Supergirl) to fight the villains. Lex eventually sent Supergirl across
dimensional boundaries to enlist the aid of Superman, and the two
superheroes returned to her universe. The two heroes stopped the villains
only after the evil Kryptonians had destroyed all other life in the pocket
universe. Supergirl then returned with Superman to his Earth, and Clark
left her with his foster parents. After some psychological problems, Matrix
left Earth for a while but later returned. When she eventually met Lex
Luthor II, she identified him with the Lex of her world, and she remained
for him for some time as his super-powered helper and girlfriend. Only when
Lex's continual scheming revealed his true nature did Supergirl grow to hate
Luthor and leave him.

I've discovered a new-found respect for Superman. I was feeling pretty cynical about people and the world in general, and then, on my break at work, I was wandering around wegmans and I see this Superman comic with a picture of Supes flying up into the sky. I picked it up and read it, and it was the story of how Superman was trying to rescue a small-towner whose house was in danger of getting torn down. It was an awesome story, and Superman was just so darn... decent! I was really heartened to see that at least in some form, these ideals are still with us. Superman was an inspiration to me.
Needless to say, I bought the comic.
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Do you know what all the kinds of Kryptonite are? I can think of 4 kinds... so try for it, folks! I give x-tra credit if you can tell WHAT each kind does!
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
I know there's the one, lumpy-meteorite kind (not sure of the specific name) which gives off radiation as well as a mysterious cosmic power-source... It's the kind of chunk Lex Luther used in the chest of that robot-guy, ummmm, Metallo, as his power source. He was as strong and fast as Supes, but couldn't fly. Also, he was constructed of some new, indestructible alloy. When faced with Superman, he'd just open up his chest panel and let the Kryptonite glow in Supe's face... MEAN! I don't know what the other kinds are. I think there's a crystalline kind of Kryptonite, but I'm not sure (kinda looks like green quartz or something). Am I close?
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Well, that robot thing rings a bell, I don't know what that was! The crystal stuff was no doubt "green kryptonite" - the most common form. Green Kryptonite was created when Krypton's core fused, and was released when Krypton exploded. Also, Superman's spaceship (the one that brought him to Earth was powered by Green Kryptonite, which is why we have Kryptonite on Earth.
Green Kryptonite's radiation literally drives out the solar energy in Superman's cells - rendering him powerless. Of course, prolonged exposure to Green Kryptonite can kill him.
I give you points for that Fred!
1) Green Kryptonite
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
What? No one else knows any other kinds of Kryptonite?
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
I think there's a red kind of Kryptonite--used to (going way out on a limb) counter-act the effects of green Krytonite? Am I right?
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Fred, there IS red! Good job! The effects on Superman are purely random... once it even turned him into the guy from the MAD magazine cover! I have also learned that there is a 5th type of Kryptonite...
By Who yo Daddy? (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
I will allow some more time before revealing all 5 kinds of Kryptonite... but first, a little excerpt from the DEATH of SUPERMAN!
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
I also was thinking about it--and wondering, is there a Blue Kryptonite? I think it's only in the series where Supes has split into red energy Superman & blue energy Superman--it de-stabilizes blue Supe's energy cohesion matrix, causing him to dissipate. Am I right, cuz this is also only a tidbit which gnawed on the back of my mind...
By The One Known Only as (Greyfox) on Unrecorded Date: |
Aliens is a kewl movie. I liked the first one, too--but in a different way. It had alot more suspense in it--and actually great character development. The second one was the next logical step: more than one alien, and a marine unit sent out to obliterate them! It was kewl on many levels: plot, suspense, gore, horror, sci-fi, character development, and action sequences. The third one de-evolved, and seemed only to be a re-hash of the 2 before it. The fourth one, Resurrection, had some interesting points within it, but not really enough for me to warrant it as comparable with #1 & #2. It also was obscenely gross--the kind of gross that's too gross to be believable. It did give some insight into the hive-esque mentality of the aliens, as well as develop Ripley alot more. If Ripley from 4 could go back and play with the marines in #2, she'd whoop up on the aliens almost all by her lonesome. Well, that's my opinion. Anybody else?
By Funk Sol Brother (Sol) on Unrecorded Date: |
Yah, I like Winona Ryder as the robot-made-by-robots. Of course, I always go for the machine-types. I think they could have made a whole movie based on that, but hey, I guess we had to have some time for the aliens.
By I am (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
I loved the second one and the first one too. However I did enjoy the third one a bit. The one thing that got me about the second one was the cloneing. I would have prefered the other idea the writers were playing with, that of the third one bbeing a dream Ripley had in cryo-sleep due to the presence of the aliens on the Sulaco. That way at least Bishop would have been repairable, Newt would grow up to replace Ripley's dead daughter, and Hicks would still be the love intrest. But I guess some of that would have made for a lame story huh.
By I am (Knight_hawk) on Unrecorded Date: |
I of course ment the fourth one with the cloneing.
I posted about the Battlestar Galactica chain reaction in the good news forum so I'll only mention it here.

I had heard about the X-men movie but haven't heard anything as to its current production state. As for the D&D movie this is the first I've heard of it.
Speaking of which has anyone heard of a cartoon series called Record of Lodoss War? It's an awesome Japanese anime based on the roleplaying world. It is a drastic departure from the usual Sci-fi futuristic stuff there known for. There are six main charecters. Parn a worrior, his friend Etoh who is an apprentice priest. The mage Slayn and his companion Ghimm the Dwarf. They are joined by Deedlit, an elf and Woodchuck, a thief. It's thirteen episode long or so and follows their quest to save their world. You can buy them on casettes one episode each I think or all of them on a two DVD set (thats what I got). Of course Ranger's not gonna like it because it's "crappy" animation.

Knight Hawk, I am very big into anime and managed to see episode 1 & 2 of Lodross - I really liked the depth - also liked how the characters were mortal (liked Bastard! for the exact opposite reason!). Knight Hawk, you're coming to LEV-2000 fest at Fred's, right? Right??? Why not bring along your Lodross plus perhaps another few of your fav titles? I'd LOVE to see some good anime!
PS - will bring the Dr. Who movie and Alien Nation - Dark Millenium because they both have year-2000 themes. I'll also be bringing Raging Rudolf - a version of Rudolf done by Martin Scorsese! Any requests from the gallery?

I like the older Klingon Bird of Prey class ships, as opposed to their new battle-ship class (from TNG and DS9). Actually, it is a kinda kewl design, but it just looks too CGI. They've been improving on it a little, I guess, but nothing beats the old cloakable scout-ship with a single proton torpedo-tube and 2 phasers. 16 Klingons on a dead man's chest, yo-ho-ho and a bottle of Romulan Ale... ;>
